Pluto is demoted
After years of wrangling and a week of bitter debate, astronomers voted on a sweeping reclassification of the solar system. In what many of them described as a triumph of science over sentiment, Pluto was demoted to the status of a “dwarf planet.” In the new solar system, there are eight planets, at least three dwarf planets and tens of thousands of so-called “smaller solar system bodies,” like comets and asteroids. For now, the dwarf planets include, besides Pluto, Ceres, the largest asteroid, and an object known as UB 313, nicknamed Xena, that is larger than Pluto.

Pluto is usually farther from the Sun than any of the nine planets; however, due to the eccentricity of its orbit, it is closer than Neptune for 20 years out of its 249 year orbit. Pluto crossed within Neptune's orbit January 21, 1979, and made its closest approach September 5, 1989, remaining within the orbit of Neptune until February 11, 1999. This will not occur again until September 2226.

the problem is that the scientist and astronomers keeps on discovering objects within the solar system which are larger than pluto. kapag hindi nila tinanggal ang pluto baka mas dumamai pa ang planet sa solar system.

mas mahirap gumawa ng chart kapag ganun at mas mahirap sauluhin ang solar system

Pluto is now consired out-of spec based dun sa bagong definition ng pagiging planet. May mas larger planet pa nga sa Pluto na nadiscover last 2003.

The debate has been going on since I was in the 6th grade about "Planet X", the first "planet" discovered in the "Kyber(?), er Kuiper Belt" which is similar to the asteroid belt but outside the orbit of the planets.

Hmmm. In fact, I remember this (Planet X) was my Show and Tell project in the 6th grade. Well that and the Pioneer 10 space probe.

Science books evolve all the time much like history and geography books. My parents still have a World Book Encyclopedia set where the latest space flight was the Apollo 11 flight to the moon.

Even my career field (weather) has evolved a lot over the past 15 years as it keeps pace with technology.

Speaking of real planets....... When I was a kid, I always wondered what would happen if someone put a match to Jupiter or Saturn....... Pooof!
