Senate bill proposes mandatory 14th-month pay for employees | News | GMA News Online

A bill has been filed at the Senate proposing mandatory 14th-month pay for all employees in the country.

Under Senate Bill 1645, filed last week by Senator Vicente Sotto III, rank-and-file employees shall be entitled to an additional midyear pay annually.

The measure proposes that the 14th-month pay be not less than half of an employee's total basic salary.

In his proposed law, Sotto said the additional 14th-month pay is needed because wages in the country "have invisibly decreased due to the rise in prices of basic commodities."

"We need extra earnings in the middle of the year to help in school and medical expenses. Health and education needs of the ordinary Filipino must be assisted by our government," the senator said.

He added that the current mandatory 13th-month pay is already "gobbled up by Christmas expenses."

Sotto's bill, however, did not specify any penalty for employers who do not grant the 14th-month pay. Instead, it instructs the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to draft implementing rules for the legislation.

The measure still needs to undergo committee and plenary deliberations and voting before it can be approved by the Senate. — Andreo Calonzo/RSJ, GMA News

Right. So when did "Christmas expenses" become a great excuse for more wages. Tang-ina... now we're (employers) liable just because employees are extra spendy in Christmas? DAFAQ.

well the intention is really good. pero i smell another rotten fish here. i just cant figure it out now.

i have nothing against the bonus but most company's that i know is already giving 14th month as part of their standard (across the band level of employee).

In the end, pare-pareho kawawa!

All of a sudden, this bill came out of the blues....and the same thing with congress with their 10K each mandatory contribution for Zambo relief. These are both unprecedented moves of generosity from both chambers that has never been done since it's conception. The overall motive is very obvious, tone down the PDAF issue.

Juan dela Cruz need to be more vigilant now more than ever has the moment we turn our back, absolutely they will sneak into their PDAF fund again what ever it may be called by then. Our politicos really sucks! may they all rot in HELL:diablo: Sana, on next years SONA, gumuho ang congress building para mamatay na silang lahat dun. :barmy::barmy:
