Do we really like brands? Is it an Asian and American thing?

My new European VP told me several times that us Filipinos must earn a lot and even more than them in Europe. I accompanied him to shop for his wife and he found out that designer brands are more expensive here in the PH and yet he sees it EVERYWHERE. I was really pissed because I wanted my boss to know that money is really hard for us Filipinos so he would feel sorry for me and give me a raise How can I do that now when he thinks Filipinos have so much money eg in my office we have staff who earn about P25k net carrying midrange designer bags of the same amount.

    everyone wants to look successful

    or look like they've "arrived"

one way to show you've arrived is buy displaying status symbols

But doesn't it have to be consistent? Like a whole lifestyle. You can't just buy brands and expect people to think that you are rich hehehe

for other people all they need is to project the image

He just assumed all of it are real. So now he thinks pinoys earn a lot. How can I convince him otherwise

Brand conscious is not only in relation to social status aspirations but in a sense that they equate brands to value for money and quality. For example, sa kotse dapat Toyota para reliable and high resale value.

Also, did you just go to the high end malls that represent the upper middle and elite classes?

Naku hindi hehe. I know someone maporma who ate nothing but cup noodles at lunch to save enough money for a trip to Europe. Barely 1 month into it nagkaroon sya ng kidney stones.

I also have a relative who had about a dozen Rolexes at one time but only buys clothes from Kmart and eats fast food.

On the opposite side of the spectrum I know a guy in his 70s who never really spent much on himself. He might be a peso billionaire by now but he still gets around in an 20+ year old car. Wears Hanes white shirts na butas and slacks made by his tailor.

He definitely enjoys making money than spending it. Sad thing is, he's too old to enjoy it now. And probably still doesn't know how to.

Imho it's their call what to do with their money (and debt) naman. Besides, if everyone had good spending habits our economy probably wouldn't grow as fast.

That's my officemate, the only difference is he is not saving up for anything. He just wants to hoard money. He eats crap daily (rotation of ministop, 711, family mart and lawson's chicken) and then he buys flavored drinks. Chips for snacks when he gets hungry. The guy is really a miser. He is so obese and everyone is talking about his weight Sabi nga namin ng friend ko lahat ng savings niya might go to medical bills.

Reminds me of my Tita who is 80+ and still flies economy going to and from the US. Okay lang sana for short flights. I told her several times that at her age she needs to be comfortable when flying. She also owns a 90s Camry. She has so much money and nothing to spend on My Mom told me to just let her be, may mga tao daw talaga who finds joy in saving.

Who are they fooling?

And I think hindi naman ganun kababaw yung boss ni Cathy, like what Vinj said baka nga sa highend malls / area siya lagi napapasyal? Aba eh puros ganun demographics nga makikita niya dun. Mayayaman at SCs [emoji23]

^High Street and Greenbelt nga lang. How'd you know? But BGC and Makati are CBDs so there are a lot of employees that represent people from all walks of life pa rin eg blue collar, tellers, call center agents, managers, VPs etc

It's an assumption really as that's where one would most likely take an expatriate boss (unless they specifically request for Tiangge then there's Greenhills). That's why in Makati CBD and BGC, you will see that the office crowd really buy at Market!Market!, SM, and Landmark. They will probably go to High Street, Glorietta and Greenbelt to walk around and perhaps eat.

There are those who are good at spotting discounts on branded stuff. For example, burburry drop the pricrs on their stock by ad much as 50% last week. The downside is the sizes are limited. Also there are pre-loved LVs, MKs, KS, prada and even hermes thAt you can get for a decent price. The question is - will it look good on you? A lot of foreigners buy class A copies at GH and nobody would think those are fakes when they carry it around. Pero take an ordinary employee na sasakay sa bus, jeepney or mrt na naka orig na LV diba may duda agad.

Speaking of "outlet stores", why is it na sobrang kaunti ng mga ganito and even factory outlets dito sa Metro Manila?
