i read somewhere that the reason for the atrocities was that the Japanese troops deployed to the Philippines and other SE countries they conquered were 2nd or 3rd rate troops, hence they were undisciplined, etc. Excuses, excuses...

WW2 fanatics like me like to recount the great battles, heroes, etc. Props to the author for reminding us about the true costs of war.
