Ayala Land Rejects PNP Industrial Blast Theory
Agence France Presse
Property firm Ayala Land Wednesday rejected police suggestions that an accidental gas explosion led to last week's deadly blast that killed 11 people at one of its shopping malls.
Police told President Arroyo and her national security advisers on Tuesday that Friday's blast at the Glorietta 2 mall in Manila's Makati financial district was most likely caused by a methane leak from industrial waste in the basement.
"As far as we know there was nothing extraordinary that our personnel mentioned to us," Ayala Land Inc. president Jaime Ayala told a news conference.
He said human waste flowing from the lavatories in the mall is processed in sump pits at the Glorietta basement and is "approximately 98 percent liquid."
Decomposition of solid waste that usually produces large volumes of methane "does not occur in this commercial sump pit," he added.
Police have not found any evidence to indicate the explosion was caused by a bomb.
They said a malfunctioning sewage pump could have caused a spark that ignited the methane gas, which could in turn have punctured a diesel tank that provided fuel for emergency generators.
Police have said that their initial finding, if confirmed, could leave the mall's operators open to a class action suit from relatives of the dead and those injured in the blast.
But Ayala said diesel does not ignite at temperatures below 220 degrees Celsius (428 degrees Fahrenheit), and the mall's maintenance personnel had not reported "any aberrations" to the diesel tank that contained about 6,000 litres (1560 gallons) of fuel.
He said the company has provided the information to the police investigators.
"I think the (police) are clearly looking at the evidence. Clearly they are not ruling anything out, if you listen to their statements," he added.
Ayala Land spokesman Alfonso Reyes said the blast had caused damage worth about P100 million ($2.2 million) but that lost revenues were not likely to impact significantly on the company's full-year profits.
Revenues from that section of the mall were equivalent to "only two percent of our total Ayala center revenues for 2006," Reyes said

Ako dun lang sa lounge (pay toilets). para malinis. hehe
Only stupid fools would believe galing sa methane ng septic tank yung explosion.
I've seen a septic tank ignite (central septic tank ng mga apartments namin). It's nothing but a little flame show.

A mostly-empty fuel tank can prove to be an explosive hazard.
Say the fuel tank is 90% empty, with even slightly-elevated temperatures the empty space in the tank will fill with fuel vapor, which is highly flammable and explosive.

PNP probes army official who found plastic bag with RDX
The army official who turned over a plastic containing RDX from the blast site at an upscale mall in Makati City will be investigated by authorities to determine if the evidence was planted.
Major Allan Sollano, a major with the Philippine Army’s Explosive and Ordnance Division reportedly gave the plastic bag he found at the Glorietta 2 mall blast site to the Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) allegedly for examination.
The plastic bag which contained traces of RDX was reportedly retrieved at the first floor of the mall.
RDX is an ingredient in bomb-making that can be found in different kinds of explosives such as C4 and TNT. It is also found on deodorants and make-up’s police said.
The initial discovery prompted the National Security Council in its meeting last Saturday to announce that it found traces of RDX at Glorietta 2. The NSC later retracted its statement when bomb experts discovered no traces of RDX at the mall and has strong theory that the incident was an accident.
Lt. Col. Ernesto Torres Jr., Army spokesman said Sollano’s group was the first to respond to the incident and cannot be interviewed.
"Sa loob ng Glorietta 2 nakahanap siya ng isang bagay na itinurn over niya sa Philippine National Police," Torres said.
Torres said Sollano is an experienced bomb technician when asked how he found the plastic among the other things that littered on the blast site.
He added that Sollano removed the plastic bag from the crime scene so he can immediately turn it over to the crime laboratory for examination.
"Iyung mga experts sa EOD they know what to find. Sa aming palagay na iyung nakuha niya sa loob at inilabas niya sinubmit niya for testing sa Philippine National Police," said Torres.
He also denied allegations that the plastic was planted and defended that Sollano should be commended for being one of the first to respond to the incident.
"We commend him kasi he was among the first ones who responded after the blast," he said.

paikot-ikot na ginagawa nila! pinanindigan na yung diesel-methane theory! laughing stock na naman ang Pinoy. Tapos pag nabanggit sa American TV series, mag-protesta!
Exactly! It’s an exciting time — more affordable and practical EVs are definitely on the way.
