'Blast likely caused by a bomb'

[SIZE=2]Six people were killed while over 50 others were injured after an explosion ripped through a mall in Makati City Friday afternoon.

Philippine National Police chief Avelino Razon said the blast in the Glorietta 2 ground level at 1:30 p.m. was "probably caused by a bomb."

"This was a bomb. But beyond that we can't say anything else yet because we are still investigating. What I can say is it was not [liquefied petroleum gas] that caused this," Razon told reporters.

A report by ABS-CBN Correspondent Charo Logarta identified four of the victims as Liza Enriquez, Janine Marcos, Jose Allen de Jesus and Lester Peregrina.

The Makati Medical Center said 51 people were rushed to hospital for treatment. Majority of the victims were children, a radio dzMM report said.

The National Capital Region Police Office was placed on red alert after the explosion. NCRPO chief Director Geary Barias said he will order more policemen deployed in nearby malls to maintain peace and order.

"We will send policemen to other malls to restore order especially here in Makati and to prevent any untoward incident," Barias told reporters.

Several shoppers said the blast was heard from a nearby baby store in the mall. Liana Navarro, sister of Black and White Movement’s Leah Navarro and who was in the mall with her mother, said several people including children were seen with “obvious injuries.”

The explosion ripped through the roof of the mall and damaged nearby shops. Debris from the blast were scattered on the streets.

Another witness, Arel Vertucio, said the explosion was so strong that it was felt up to the third level of the mall. Vertucio said he saw some people lying on the ground.

Eyewitness Icy Marinas was only 15 meters away from the Glorietta explosion when it occurred. She said the blast felt like an "intense earthquake."

She said she saw a pregnant woman crying after the blast while other women started rushing out of the mall with their families. She added that she saw "three bloodied men" near the blast site while the security guards just stood around with no reaction.

President Arroyo ordered the police to “leave no stone unturned” in its investigation on the explosion.

“The President is deeply saddened by this incident and extends her sympathies to the families of the casualties… She has also ordered the PNP to get to the bottom of things and to leave no stone unturned,” Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a statement.

Bunye said the President also ordered the Department of Social Welfare and Development to extend assistance to the victims to mitigate their suffering.

MANILA, Oct 19, 2007 (AFP) - A bomb ripped through a shopping mall in the Philippines capital's financial district Friday, killing four people, police and rescue workers said.
Panicked shoppers ran out of the Glorietta mall in the Makati district of Manila as smoke billowed out of the building.
A member of the rescue teams inside the mall told AFP four people have been confirmed dead. Local television said at least 45 other people were injured.
Police initially blamed the noon time blast on a gas leak at a restaurant inside the shopping centre.
However national police chief Avelino Razon said: "From our assessment this was not, as initially reported, an LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) leak.
"This was a bomb. But beyond that we can't say anything else yet because we are still investigating. What I can say is it was not LPG that caused this."
Local media said the scale and type of the damage tended to rule out a mere fuel tank explosion.
Witnesses said part of a ceiling collapsed while a concrete wall was blown out. ABS-CBN television reported seeing a huge crater on the concrete floor on the ground floor.
Two cars and two delivery vans were buried under wooden planks and concrete debris outside the mall.
"It was so powerful," clothing store clerk Jeric Balendes told AFP on the scene, as rescuers applied first aid on his cuts and bruises.
"The roof just collapsed on us. I could hear my three co-workers screaming. I got out through a small hole. I don't know if they got out."
Police stepped up security across the Manila area, a sprawling city of 12 million people.
Bomb squad teams sifted through the debris looking for clues, while extra police were drafted in to divert traffic and seal off the surrounding area -- one of the busiest shopping districts of Manila.
Makati City councilor JunJun Binay said the explosion left an eight-metre (26-foot) wide crater on the ground floor and blew a hole through the roof on the second floor.
"From what I have seen it was a significant explosion and that most of the dead and injured were all employees," he said.
The bodies of three of the dead lay covered in blankets on the floor of the adjacent car park, being used as an emergency medical assessment area.
"There was a sudden explosion," said Christine Calope, one of the injured. "I don't know if it was inside or outside the mall."
Witnesses said the blast occurred in a section of the mall with clusters of stores selling baby clothes and toys.
Regional police chief Geary Barias said police had not received any threats about an attack.
Police did not immediately name likely suspects for the attack, but Islamic militants were blamed for a bomb on a bus near the Glorietta mall that killed four people in February 2005.
Militants also firebombed a ferry on Manila Bay the previous year, killing more than 100 people in the country's worst terrorist attack.

I recognized the area at once. Whoever these animals are, they are now attacking our children.

There is no one who can help us but ourselves.

We don't even need to know who committed this act. I believe it is high time that we become a much more intolerant society as the reality of our situation demands it.

I do not advocate any sort of discrimination. Merely for peaceful people like us to be more wary and committed to action, kahit mag-mukha tayong tanga.

For example, several times, I've seen people deliberately ignore suspicious looking bags left in public areas. Not once did anyone but myself act. Ang dami nakapansin who just walked away. Palagi ako nalang nakakakuha ng masamang tingin from security kasi I demand that they investigate these bags, which fortunately were mostly just trash, and once, an actual lost & found.

I believe that the simple act of being more alert to suspicious items and people would eliminate this threat. Alam mo na, parang daga mga yan e, pag nakaamoy na nagbabantay ang tao, di magpapakita.

yes i believe yan nga yun area ng baby clothes. but I dont believe they're attacking the children.

way way back in the bomb scare days of 2k1, 2k2, I lined up in Megamall entrance ... sobrang haba ang linya bec. of bomb checks and detection. and so naisip ko, if the purpose of bombers is to bomb a lot of people. sa entrance pa lang makakarami na siya and there's no security pa.

and this is what happened today. even if sobrang secure and well versed na ang mga sikyu, police, bomb sniffing dogs natin sa entrance. they can still trigger it outside, oklahoma style.

and this is the scariest part, this is random. no planning, no planting. you can be hit anywhere lalo na kung malapit ka sa entrance.
