1. Engage emergency brake and have the car in Neutral - that way, I can have the car avoid lurching forward should I start the car and I'm not pressing down on the clutch.
2. First thing you need to do is practice shifting. Memorize the layout of the gears. With the engine off, gears Neutral, and emergency brakes engaged, press down (with left foot) on the clutch as far down as you can and keep it down. As soon as the clutch is pressed down, move the stickshift forward from Neutral to 1st gear. Then let off on the clutch. Press down again on the clutch and move the stickshift back to 2nd, let off on the clutch. Press down on the clutch once more and move the stick forward to 3rd gear. Keep going to the last gear. Then, try to repeat the process, but this time downshifting. On any decent gearbox, the stick should shift effortlessly.
Once you're comfortable with the gears, try it with the engine running and plenty of space like a huge empty parking lot. Again, I like to keep my car in Neutral and the emergency brakes engaged.
To start the car, Press down on the clutch, keep it down and start the car.
Clutch pressed down, disengage the emergency brake and move the stickshift forward from Neutral to 1st gear.
The clutch still pressed down, press slowly on the gas pedal and at the same time let off slowly on the clutch. The car should move forward slowly.
Expect a lot of stalls at first unless you're a very fast learner (I learned to drive when I was 12). There's no real way to learn how to modulate between the gas pedal and the clutch unless you're at the driver's seat and with practice.
Eventually, you'll get the technique of modulating between the clutch and gas pedals. Remember, Left Foot always for the clutch, Right Foot always for the gas and brake pedals.
Also remember that pressing down the clutch will keep the engine from stalling, especially at very slow speeds.
2. Now, going back to 1st gear with the engine running, the car should be moving as fast as 1st gear will allow which is pretty slow. When you get close to the speed limit of first gear, the engine noise pitch will become higher which is the cue to change to 2nd gear.
Once you hear the engine at a higher pitch, press down once more on the clutch, keep it down, and move the stickshift back from 1st gear to 2nd gear. Let off slowly on the clutch and at the same time pressing down on the gas pedal. You should be moving a bit faster than when at first gear. You should probably practice going very slow and stick to 1st and 2nd gears until you're comfortable and ready to go faster.
At this stage, you should also practice coming to a stop by pressing down on the brake pedal (Right Foot) to slow the car down. As the car slows to a stop, press down the clutch with the Left Foot to keep the engine running. At this stage, your Right Foot should be on the brake pedal while the Left Foot should be pressing down on the clutch. When the car comes to a full stop, put the stickshift to Neutral and engage the emergency brake. You can then let the clutch go and ease up on the brakes. You can then practice these over and over until you're ready to go out on the road to use 3rd gear and higher and at a faster speed.
