let's do a simple calculation.
the price of diesel fuel 2 yrs ago is around P21.00/liter
the price of diesel fuel now is around P33.00/liter
the difference: P12.00/liter
the price of corn 2 yrs ago is around P9.00/kg
the price of corn now is around P13.00/kg
the difference: P4.00/kg
a truck that can load 10 tons of corn travels around 500kms, round trip, from the supplier to the customer and back.
let's say the fuel consumption of the truck is around 4kms/li. at P12.00/li difference, that is P3.00/km. so for the 500km trip., it costs an additional P1,500.00.
for the 10tons of corn that the truck ships, the cost of corn now is P40,000.00 more than 2yrs ago.
what i'm trying to point out is, the increase in the price of fuel is not directly proportional to the increase in the cost of goods.
but the increase in the prices of the affected commodity because it is now being processed into fuel is directly felt by the people.
i am not against ethanol. renewable and clean sources of energy should be the way to go. but, the people behind this, including the government, should think of ways to cushion the effect of the increase in cost of these commodities.

March 12th, 2007 10:37 AM #16its nice to hear that ethanol thing hear at tsikot. i've been trying to to do a thesis about ethanol. more on the economic and environmental impacts.
at first glance kasi mukang answer talaga siya sa madaming problema natin related to fossil fuel (air pollution, fluctuating oil supply, etc.). pero if we really analyze the whole thing, the benefits may not be that big compared to costs. of course, ndi pa yan proven dito sa pinas that is why meron ako balak na thesis hehehe
sa pinas ata ay galing sa sugarcane or molasses ang ethanol not like sa states na sa grains like corn etc galing ang ethanol.

kung sugarcane ang gagamitin, tataas ang price of sugar. And almost every food and beverage product uses sugar.
Kung coconut oil ang gagamitin, what is our cooking oil made of? Hindi ba coconut oil?
So we the food consumers will be competing with ethanol producers for the same stuff.
Increased demand caused by ethanol production will drive up the prices of those commodities.
mas mabilis and mas direct ung effect nyan hindi ba?
