Netizens mixed on 'dancing cabin crew' video

MANILA, Philippines - After policemen, traffic enforcers, cooks and waiters, here come the dancing cabin crew of local budget airline Cebu Pacific.

Carrying seat belts, life jackets and oxygen masks, young female flight attendants danced to Lady Gaga's Just Dance and Katy Perry's California Girls while demonstrating safety procedures, as recorded on video by one of the passengers.

Actual flight safety guidelines were read while the music was being played in the aircraft.

The YouTube video, which was uploaded only on Thursday, has generated more than a hundred comments.

Netizens particularly commended the Gokongwei-led airline for having "pretty flight attendants" and "nice (dance) moves."

"Brilliant! A refreshing change to the same old uptight drill. Way to go, Cebu Pacific, love it," one of them said.

Another added, "Hahaha having fun while working, that's cool. Now you'll know when in an emergency, you'll hear that music and dance. All you need to know now is the dance step."

    Instructions not clear?

The video, however, did not sit well with some Internet users, who called the dance routine "cheap," "ridiculous" and "unnecessary."

Others scored Cebu Pacific for "taking safety lightly" by not providing clear safety instructions and allowing electronic gadgets such as video cameras to be used inside the aircraft.

"The FAs (flight attendants) are pretty and they dance very well but I think safety demonstrations should be shown as it is especially for first-time passengers. Safety demonstrations are not for the passengers' entertainment but for their protection," one user said.

"You think when this flight undergoes an emergency, will the paxs (people) remember the song and dance or the safety features of this aircraft and how to use the emergency equipment?" another quipped.

    Just for fun

Reacting to the feedback they saw on YouTube, Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing Candice Iyog made it clear that the cabin crew's dance routine was meant to "make people interested, showcase homegrown talent and raise morale."

She stressed, however that passenger safety remains their primary concern.

"This does not replace the serious safety demo as required by CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines). It was done at cruising altitude during one of our test flights," Iyog told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

She continued, "They (cabin crew) also enjoyed it, not just the passengers. We just want to add a little more fun. We're always thinking of new things."

Iyog revealed that Cebu Pacific tapped the help of professionals to come up with the dance routine and has trained at least "2 sets of cabin crew" for the company's new gimmick.

She said they are planning to roll this out to long flights to keep guests entertained.

"Maybe for flights that last longer than an hour, both for domestic and international flights," Iyog said, adding, "We're going to do this along with the serious safety demo."

Asked how this dance routine may affect Cebu Pacific's ticket sales, Iyog said, "I don't think that's our intent. It's more about awareness of our brand and our culture, that we Filipinos know how to have fun, too."

Cebu Pacific carried more passengers than its closest rival, flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL), during the first half of the year.

The Gokongwei-led carrier claims to be the country's leading airline as it dominated air travel from January to June, with a market share of 48.7%

The YouTube video has recieved 296,000 views from yesterday's mere 10,000. It even caught the attention on Yahoo. Best Marketing video for Cebu Pacific...

Coffee, Tea...Or Gaga? Flight Attendants Safety-Dance To Pop Hits
Posted Fri Oct 1, 2010 11:19am PDT by Lyndsey Parker

Airlines are slashing amenities left and right these days--legroom, blankets, check-on baggage allotments, peanuts, and free meals are now pretty hard to come by in the not-so-friendly skies--but luckily the Philippines' Cebu Pacific Airlines hasn't cut back on its in-flight entertainment, judging by a new viral video currently flying around the Interweb faster than a Concord..

In the cute and funny clip, Cebu flight attendants choreograph what would otherwise be a dull safety demonstration to pop hits by Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. The smiling stewardesses demonstrate proper seatbelt-fastening techniques and life-vest deployment to Gaga's "Just Dance," then show off their coordinated oxygen-mask-fastening skills and point out the nearest exits while shimmying in their retro-mod orange uniforms to "California Gurls." .

Yes, apparently electronic devices are still forbidden on flights, but electronic music is perfectly fine. In fact, with the monotonic, Max Headroom-esque voice reciting Cebu's safety instructions on top of the Lady and Katy songs, the effect is like one cool techno mashup. We wouldn't be surprised if clever DJs start spinning the "Cebu Megamix" in Philippines airport lounges pretty soon..

Obviously this clip makes for a better Cebu advertisement than any legitimate big-budget commercial could ever provide. Which begs the question: Was this video planted online by Cebu? Quite possibly. .

Case in point: The amused passenger who uploaded this onto YouTube, "wingco1129," only joined YouTube yesterday (the day this clip was apparently shot), and has no other videos on his/her YouTube channel. Additionally, winco1129's description accompanying the video says [sic], "something interesting happened on my Cebu pacific flight this afternoon. the FAs suddenly burst into a dance!!! that was soooo cooool!!!" But if wingco was really so surprised (assuming he/she is not a frequent Cebu flier)...then how did he/she know to have the camera at the ready and to hit record right when the first notes of "Just Dance" were played? Huh?.

So yes, this was probably staged. But if so...who cares? Clearly the marketing execs over at Cebu are geniuses. And beside, these attendants are actually getting passengers to pay attention to safety demonstrations for once, and they're making the skies just a little friendlier (and funkier). So everyone wins.

i don't know. . .those are safety instructions that should be remembered in case something happens and giving those instructions must be free of any distractions. . .naging focus na yung sayaw instead of the detailed instructions. . .

in case of an emergency and you don't know what to do, you will curse those gyrating hips and smiling faces which you remembered more than the instructions on what to do

dapat explain muna nang maayos, then pole dancing if they really want to entertain their passengers

Cebu Pacific shimmying stewardesses take off online
    TJ DIMACALI, GMANews.TV
    10/02/2010 | 01:43 PM

One of the latest YouTube videos out of the Philippines to take off and go viral is a recent post by YouTube user "wingco1129", showing flight attendants of Cebu Pacific Airlines, a local carrier, conducting the usual pre-flight demonstration while dancing to a mashup of Lady Gaga's "Just Dance" and Katy Perry's "California Gurls".

As of 2:30pm on October 2, less than 48 ours after it was posted on September 30, the video has already been viewed over 700,000 times. It has also been picked up by news organizations and blogs around the world, including The UK Telegraph, Yahoo Music Blog, and The Huffington Post.

The video is such a big online hit that it has already come to the attention of celebrity host Ryan Seacrest -who, in turn, has brought it to the attention of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry themselves.

"gotta see this! Flight attendants dancing the entire safety demo to *ladygaga & *katyperry: http://bit.ly/cCOgS1," he tweeted.

As of this posting, however, both celebrities have yet to reply.

"Cebu Pacific has always been known as a fun airline. We were looking for something new and different, to show that flight safety doesn't have to be boring," said Cebu Pacific vice president for marketing and distribution Candice Iyog in an interview with GMANews.TV.

Iyog said that the airline had hired professional choreographers to compose the steps, which were meant to be entertaining even as they highlighted the important safety procedures that passengers need to remember in case of emergencies.

"We knew that the performances would be well received, but we didn't expect them to be this popular," Iyog said when she was informed that the video had gone viral.

Iyog also allayed concerns that the performance posed any hazards to the flight. She explained that the dance was done in-flight, and was just a supplement to the usual standard (and non-musical) safety instructions that are conducted before takeoff. - GMANews.TV
