BOC probes US actor's claim he was stopped at NAIA » Nation » News | Philippine News | philstar.com
MANILA, Philippines - Bureau of Customs Commissioner Rufino Biazon ordered yesterday an investigation of reports that actor Taylor Kitsch, who played Gambit in the movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” was stopped by airport personnel when he arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last Feb. 29.
Biazon said he immediately ordered a probe after learning yesterday morning that the 30-year-old Kitsch was nearly prevented from entering the country.
“I ordered his travel records checked, such as when he entered the country so that we could look for it in the closed-circuit television, if it was captured on video,” the BOC chief said, adding that he has also coordinated with the United States’ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Biazon said that based on Kitsch’s March 1 interview on the “Late Show with David Letterman,” there is a possibility that the actor’s unfortunate encounter was with a Bureau of Immigration (BI) officer.
He noted that Kitsch said the airport employee told him there was no longer any space in his passport for a new stamp and threatened him that he would be sent back to Japan.
“The BOC does not have that authority. Apparently, if what he says is true, he was talking to an immigration officer and not customs…It is quite obvious that it was not Customs,” Biazon said.
He believes Kitsch may have assumed that the systems in the US and the Philippines are similar. “In the US, they meet the Customs and Border Patrol. In the US, Immigration and Customs are combined,” Biazon said.
BI still checking
BI associate commissioner Siegfred Mison said they are still verifying the news report. “We are trying to find out his real name. Our records do not have any Taylor Kitsch,” he said.
Sources said Kitsch arrived in the country Feb. 29 and left for Japan on March 1. His travel documents were reportedly not processed because there was a power failure at the airport at the time.
Kitsch reportedly said in the interview that a Customs officer stopped him when he went back to the Philippines because there was no longer any space for a new stamp. He was instructed to return to Japan.
He introduced himself as an actor and said he was working with John Travolta on the up coming film “Savages,” but the officer replied, “Where’s Travolta?”
The airport computer was also reportedly down at that time so he took out his iPhone and showed the officer a trailer of the film “John Carter,” wherein he plays the lead role. But the officer doubted his story and even asked the actor to give him an iPhone.
Even after showing him a trailer of the film, the officer still questioned him because of the length of his hair. He was eventually allowed to enter the country because the officer liked the trailer of the film.
