Well if you're in one of the modern buildings dont be afraid, skyscrapers are WAAAAAY safer in earthquakes than lowrise...
Skyscrapers nowadays (yes even in Manila) have been retrofitted with earthquake buffers... and in addition, skyscrapers are made to sway not hold still... Mga nasa 20floors or less na lumang cement type buildings ang matakot... yun gumuguho...
Oploks talaga Philvolks to publish that...

roninblade -- nakakatakot talaga. during the 1990 earthquake, i was on the 9th floor of a building in makati and we were moving side to side. inisip ko na nga at that time na "this is it, at kung mamatay man ako eh sana mabilis." buti nalang the building held up and we all rushed down the fire escape. may bitbit pa kaming office mate na hinimatay
paano ko ba ma describe ang feeling at takot? siguro try standing in the middle of a plywood slat, resting in between two pillars and suspended some 50 feet off the ground. then have someone shake this try not to fall down. parang ganun ang feeling
brrrrr, ayaw ko nang maranasan yun

abs-cbbnews.com:
Alert level 1 up at Taal volcano
Alert Level 1 was hoisted over areas surrounding the Taal volcano in Talisay, Batangas following the increased seismic activity on the island, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said in a bulletin Friday.
Surface observations, however, do not indicate any significant change in the thermal and steam emission characteristics of the main crater lake area, the agency clarified.
PHIVOLCS assured residents within the island and villages along the coast of Taal Lake that there is no indication of an impending eruption.
Alert Level 1 means that there is a slight increase in seismic activity but no eruption is imminent, PHIVOLCS said. The agency, however, warned that the seismic unrest could intensify in the coming days and weeks and that the public should be vigilant when visiting the island.
It also recommended that the main crater area should be off-limits to human traffic because sudden steam explosions may occur or high concentrations of noxious gases may accumulate.

a rumor circulated the other day that it'll earthquake tomorrow.
some of the girls here are already panicking while we just scoffed at 'em for believing such rumors. they even don't want to attend a meeting because of that and left early. haha.
anyway, i'll be waiting for that damn earthquake. it should be pretty much scary here in the 29th floor. :D

when punongbayaan was still philvocs chief there was a study done on the marikina fault line, the one that extends from bulacan passing through fairview, marikina, loyola heights, behind ULTRA and all the way to tagaytay. they made carbon-14 dating of the known earthquakes as recorded on the rock faces and even then (about 5 years ago?) they had already found out that the marikina fault is a regular active fault with a predictable cycle of years between each major activity. they surmised at the time that the fault line is due for another major quake, giving it a 0-100 years time line. mind you 100 years is nothing in geologic time. besides it can be today, who knows?
i know the present head of philvocs. a native of bohol, rene sulidum was 5th in the 1979 national science quiz (i shared the same room with him in zamboanga city) and was a scholar at UP diliman where he took bs geology (we were classmates in physics 71 and 72). this guy is not your regular government beauruecrat and i don't think he is someone that one can label an "alarmist". if he cries "wolf!", better hide.

October 29th, 2004 06:04 PM #17Well for one i feel secure when i'm at home, my dad is a geologist and he planned our house pretty well, he selected the soil that our house is built on and made it stronger than a typical home.
But then again what would it be like in the office? 33 floors up in the JG Summit Building! this building better be d*mn well built! I'd probably be screaming like a bat out of hell, but if I survive I'd be one of the happiest people on earth!

IMHO the press release is not a very responsible one, they (Philvolcs) should have elaborated more on the impending disaster, they can't even give a time frame, "anytime" could be now, tomorrow or never at all.
What if the press release was fanned-out by some (a lot?) irresposible media people or idiot politician/bureaucrats, panic buying, hoarding, property value will collapse, even bankrun can happen and a lot more.
IMHO what Philvolcs should have done, instead of making such statement, is to inform the Executive branch of the government so that the National Disaster Coordinating Council can draw a contingency plan in case such a catastrophic event occurs.
I believe the Philvolcs honcho has good intentions when he made that press release, but he should think first before making such claims because the effects of such statement can also be disastrous.

Hmmm... in my opinion, Phivolcs was merely stating a fact.... A fact that concerns everyone living in Metro manila.
Kung may irresponsible man dito ito yung mga journalists or what have you that will distort the facts for their own benefit.
By the way, I'm pretty sure the NDCC was informed before this was released to the public.

diba nag-earthquake 2-3 weeks ago... kung kelan contrary to the belief of philvocs... ayon sa ibang countries kung kelan pinaka-tahimik ang galaw ng fault pati volcano dun malakas ang earthquake... pero kahit ano pa man... sana huwag matuloy... mag-dasal na lang tayo...
