A woman was diagnosed with gonorrhoea after she turned up to A&E about a blistering rash on her hands. The unusual symptom - which strangely manifested nowhere near her genitals - turned out to be linked to the STI.

A report on the New England Journal of Medicine described the case, which involved a patient at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas.

"A 20-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a rash involving the arms, legs, trunk, and scalp, which had erupted that morning," read the notes. The young woman also reported generalised muscle aches, fever, and ankle pain to doctors, who later made the discovery of gonorrhoea as the culprit.

The woman in question had had unprotected *** with a new partner just a few weeks before, which led doctors to suspect she had contracted a ***ually transmitted disease, and tests later confirmed the diagnosis.

Despite the increasing spread of untreatable 'super gonorrhoea', this woman's STI was successfully cured with a course of antibiotics.

In order to raise awareness of the unusual symptom, the doctors at the medical centre shared a photograph of the woman's rash in a medical journal. At least three blisters are visible in the picture, which might not be the ideal accompaniment to your lunch:

Symptoms of gonorrhoea are known to be less obvious than many other STIs. These include a scratchy throat, an aching pelvis, burning pee, pain during ***, spotting blood, and an inflamed anus. Dreamy.

The take-home? Use protection, folks.
