RP population to hit 85.2M this year

FILIPINOS are expected to balloon to 85.2 million this year, said the Commission on Population, citing projections from the National Demographic and Health Survey.
The projection is based mainly on the current 2.36-percent annual population growth rate, according to Tomas Osias, the commission's executive director.

Unless the rate is slowed down, 5,800 more Filipinos would be born in 24 hours, 6.4 million in three years, and 12.6 in six years, he said, citing NDHS estimates.

Osias called on the government to further promote family planning all over the country.

"Seventeen percent of women would like to plan their pregnancy but do not have the means to do so because of the lack of access to family planning services," he said. "That is also the reason why one in three births occur within two years of the previous birth."

The Arroyo administration's main family planning program, "Ligtas Buntis" of the Department of Health, is on hold following an aggressive launching
    in February.

The program came under fire from the Catholic Church for promoting artificial birth control methods such as the use of pills, condoms and even the controversial intrauterine device (IUD).

Outgoing Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit, who is set to step down on May 31, had admitted he personally preferred natural methods.

His successor, Dr. Francisco Duque III of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., said he would first conduct consultation meetings with Church groups, natural family planning advocates, and health workers before deciding on the fate of Ligtas Buntis.

In the meantime, he suggested that it be renamed "Ligtas na Pagbubuntis" to appease critics who insist that the present title brings down pregnancy to the level of disease.

falken: precisely. and that's what makes it so sad. health workers do their best to help stem the rise in population, and yet here are other higher powers who tell people to do the opposite.

i don't wanna be selfish and all that pero in the end, tayo rin naman ang nagsusubsidize ng mga feeding program, etc, for the people...which in the first place might not have been here if they practiced effective population control.

I think mayor Atienza is being a DICTATOR. Can you possibly outlaw selling condoms in the city? Islamic State ba tayo? I think Filipinos should try to assert their rights and challenge this kind of Taliban-minded policies. What crime are you committing by selling or buying condoms? Marami pa kasing mga elderly people sa ating gubyerno who insist on imposing their traditions and personal beliefs sa ibang tao. Parang MTRCB ba. Kung sa tingin niya eh malaswa yung babaeng nagpakita ng panty, dapat malaswa rin ang tingin ng lahat ng tao.

Wala kasing Civil Liberties Union dito sa Pinas hindi tulad sa States.

    Popcom is wrong. Why?

    1. The Philippines is not overpopulated. Our population density is only 255 people/square kilometer versus Hongkong, Singapore, Japan which have over 6,000 people per square kilometer.

    2. Poverty is not caused by overpopulation. Poverty is caused by corruption and bad governance. In the 1960's, the Philippines was only second to Japan in being the most modern country in Asia, and yet, a family averages 7 children during that time.

    3. Atienza did not OUTLAW condoms in Manila. You can still buy it in drugstores.

    4. Pills are abortifacients i.e. a form of abortion. Their primary action is to make the uterus lining inhabitable thereby causing the fertilized ovum to fail to implant.

yeah but it would be wise for poor families that have ultra low income to practice some kind of birth control kundi sila rin mahihirapan sa huli, imo the mayor should promote birth control to improve the poor families' way of life.

corruption n bad governance is whole different ballgame, ma-off topic tau nyan

yes Kimpoy, I agree with you. Metro Manila is congested.

Because nandito ang trabaho, everybody goes here. That is why we experience traffic problems. That is why we need to develop the countryside so that jobs will be available there. We can also imitate Thailand which modernized their farming methods (which by the way, they learned from studying at the UP Los Banos) , making them a top exporter of rice in the world.

Yes it may not be a direct cause, but it is a big factor on why we are a poor country. You cannot compare the 1960s to the 20th century, times are different. And tama si Kimpoy, overpopulated ang Metro Manila, lahat gusto pumunta dito.

Yes, I agree with you. Families who could not support their children should practice family planning. They could practice natural family planning.

However, corruption and bad governance is very relevant because it is a main cause of poverty in the Philippines, and not population.
