May 28th, 2005 11:07 AM #1RP population to hit 85.2M this year
FILIPINOS are expected to balloon to 85.2 million this year, said the Commission on Population, citing projections from the National Demographic and Health Survey.
The projection is based mainly on the current 2.36-percent annual population growth rate, according to Tomas Osias, the commission's executive director.
Unless the rate is slowed down, 5,800 more Filipinos would be born in 24 hours, 6.4 million in three years, and 12.6 in six years, he said, citing NDHS estimates.
Osias called on the government to further promote family planning all over the country.
"Seventeen percent of women would like to plan their pregnancy but do not have the means to do so because of the lack of access to family planning services," he said. "That is also the reason why one in three births occur within two years of the previous birth."
The Arroyo administration's main family planning program, "Ligtas Buntis" of the Department of Health, is on hold following an aggressive launching
in February.
The program came under fire from the Catholic Church for promoting artificial birth control methods such as the use of pills, condoms and even the controversial intrauterine device (IUD).
Outgoing Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit, who is set to step down on May 31, had admitted he personally preferred natural methods.
His successor, Dr. Francisco Duque III of the Philippine Health Insurance Corp., said he would first conduct consultation meetings with Church groups, natural family planning advocates, and health workers before deciding on the fate of Ligtas Buntis.
In the meantime, he suggested that it be renamed "Ligtas na Pagbubuntis" to appease critics who insist that the present title brings down pregnancy to the level of disease.

falken: precisely. and that's what makes it so sad. health workers do their best to help stem the rise in population, and yet here are other higher powers who tell people to do the opposite.
i don't wanna be selfish and all that pero in the end, tayo rin naman ang nagsusubsidize ng mga feeding program, etc, for the people...which in the first place might not have been here if they practiced effective population control.
Choice I would have made as well.
