I'm having my valve seals replaced (spark plugs wet in oil) to eliminate smoke belching on mid-to-high rpms.

However, does it still need top overhaul?

Or do I need to do another set of tests? Leak test necessary?

Thanks. Guess valve seal replacement is a 'good to go' now.

You mean 'dukot style'. Once I had also unrealized valve seal problem, though sa diesel engine. My mechanic per experience was telling me, he is almost sure about it, having hard starting and bluish smoke but with otherwise good engine power differentiating it againts the need for the low engine job.

So he removed the head and there in the suspected cylinder were hard cakes of carbon, the other cylinders have but fine carbon soot that is easily remove when touch by hand.

After carefully removing those hard carbon deposit, valve grinding, and valve seal replacement, the engine doesnt even need the glow-plugs to start in cold mornings and the engine is much smoother without the shameful dark smoke.

Compression test passed: still need overhaul?
