Very true. The reason why we did the day trip and we stuck to the main road (MacArthur) after SCTEX is coz we had kids in tow. Since I did not know how the alternate (longer but quicker) route was, and had been warned of the lack of good stopovers by the very same folks who've painstakingly explained the details of the route, I decided to stick to the slower but safer route. It was not really that much slower IMO, but I'm sure the guys who frequent the north will have something to say.
