Kelan ba nagsimula itong Gen1, something like '96? Gusto ko pa rin talaga porma nito compared sa mga kasabayan nya, not that too big for an SUV and not too small for a car. Tamang-tama lang talaga.
Parang iba lang yung front grille nya? Anyway I still like this car.
and by the way, for those who would like to get more information on your Sportage check this out.

It was supposed to be a good car. I say"supposed" kasi the local version was waaaay inferior to the US-spec model.
The company that built the local version (Columbian Autocar) didn't do a good job in assembling these vehicles. They tried to cut down too much on costs to be able to make the model competitive. In 1997, they skimped on paint quality, the fit and finish was bad, they used the trim of the earliest model and cut down on bits and pieces that were integral to the look and sophistication of the car.
That is why almost all the KIAs and Mazdas and even the BMWs that Columbian built had bad paint jobs that faded and also had bad build quality. It's a good thing Columbian closed.
The Sportage I was a good affordable SUV with Lotus tuned suspension. This model was the last of the Mazda-engined KIAs bec when Hyundai bought out KIA to save it from bankruptcy, Kia switched to Hyundai powerplants and platforms which were basically Mitsubishi.
I have a relative who owns a 1998 limited edition Sportage2-door convertible with soft top in Maryland and it's fun to drive.

i drive one. it steers very well. ang gaan dalhin, napaka tipid sa diesel, its around 19km/l. ang dali pa i-maintain at readily available ang parts kasi you can use the mazda's parts. Mine is a surplus unit from korea. At first dami prob sa engine, kasi matagal na ito naka tambay sa korea kaya nag wear and tear na ang ibang parts. As of now, its doing very much ok, lamig pa nang aircon.![]()

sir, i dont have any idea if meron bang diesel sa local unit ng 1st gen sportage. sa gen.2 meron, crdi na.
Agree with the coldness ng aircon. Because of reliability issue ko sa diesel engine nya, pinalitan ko ng Mazda RF yung engine. Engine problems ko nawala then (3 years ago) although I think now, start na lumabas sakit na overheat nung Mazda diesel engine.
Share naman your experience. Thanks.
What the Kia tech did with mine was to locked-fix the fan. Try to check (with the engine off) and turn the fan with your hand, kapag umikot, ibig sabihin hindi naka lock ito at nakadesign pa rin ang fan para sa malalamig na bansa tulad ng korea. Kapag naiikot mo kasi sa kamay yung fan, parang nagi-slide lang yung belt at hindi todo yung buga ng hangin nito. hope u get the idea. thanks
I have one sportage ang engine is kia- RF intercooler turbo, ang tanong ko is saan ako makabibili ng original cylinder head gasket. please help me? any recomendation na maiibigay sa akin i appreciate it very much.
I would like to ask, what is the real year model of sportage grand long body. Turbo intercooler 4 x 4. with abs but it doesnt have airbags. Yong surplus shop that i bought the car says its a 1997 year model, But when i check the specs sa internet hindi siya match. But year 98 to 2000 model match siya, because of the abs. Im confused..
Info to those who knows? im selling my car and i can't seem to figure out the year model...

I have an imported Sporty from Subic. 5-speed manual, Diesel n/a, 4x4. 1st gen short body. May 2nd gen yung kasama ko sa ofc. Long body, turbo diesel, mas malaki at mas mahaba. Mas aggressive-looking with fender flares and side skirt stock.
I used to experience overheating.
Everything rattles pag pinilit kong ibirit. Tapos ang lakas sa krudo. Mausok pa. Then changed oil, replaced fuel and the 2 oil filters, air filter, ayun! no usok, lumakas hatak and top speed, 15 km/L city driving at parang ayaw maubos nung krudo! (that's with my "galit sa gas at lahat kinakarera" heavy foot driving style). I hope to get even better mileage after injection cleaning, calibration, and a degree in defensive driving lessons.
Thanks!
sorry for the late reply sir! pero thanks for that!
i'm planning to change tires from stock 205/70/r15 to 235/75/r15 A/T or M/T to get more aggressive look. wala ba talagang sabit sa fender o bumper? stock ride height ako, walang lift.
pano ba talaga sabihin yung "sportage"?
hi! were planning to buy grand sportage surplus from korea. ok ba ang unit?ang makina?iv heard and read that madali daw mag overheat....
what will we check if were going to buy one?
bro, i also have a sportage gen1, 4x4 kr2 2.0l diesel MT. got it from Cagayan. Overheating issues due to worn-out cooling system hoses. solution is to clean the rad, change all cooling system hose esp the small one near the water pump, refill with coolant and distilled water and overheating problem solved. other things to look out for before buying 1st gen sporty is a faulty/leaking head gasket which is also a source for overheating and the timing belt(change with genuine mazda r2). most of us also cancelled the temperature sensor to make the fan and water pump active upon ignition. check/change all oils, grease, cv-boot and your good to go, the sportage is running smoothly at 12-14 km/L(mixed) around 10-11 km/L(city driving). most major parts are available here in zamboanga, engine is same as mazda r2, some(esp accessories) that are out of stock here, i get from goodgear, taft/edsa crossing(taft left side if going towards quiapo???). or goodgear banawe(i got my cvboots from here).
Ah more fellow Gen 1 owners.
Thanks for the heads up, I think my next task to get my radiator flushed/overhauled (which is more effective?) since I just got most of my cooling system hoses changed from a recent overheat. I already had my transmission checked and thank goodness there's nothing wrong. The mechanic at Lucas AT just did an ATF change, inspected the pan and made some adjustments and viola I got most of my torque back.
Thanks for the tip about good gear![]()
I'm still having trouble trying to figure out how to get an accurate milage though. Sorry for the noob question, but with my trip meter / odometer busted how does one calculate for milage? I only make an estimate that whenever my gauge reaches the red line, I refill with 500 (about 9 liters) and it always goes to the next line. Now just following google maps, my best estimate is I'm spending 9 liters every 50 km. But thats only a very rough estimate, can you guys share a more effective way of measuring?
Btw I have another question for you or other gen 1 owners out there. Would you know if its possible to fit a 98 Sportage headlight assembly on a 97? Looking at the photos and comparing them both it seems to have the same screw holes.
1997
1998-2001
I'm dying to change my headlights and could not find a clear lens to get projectors fitted in. if I can get away with a new clear (non fluted) 98-2001 headlight I'll be a happy camper.
Any input will be very helpful thanks guys!
