Depende rin, bro, on how do you intend to use your SUV. The Montero and Fortuner, especially the 4x4 variants really drive differently. They may not be as snappy as the Sorento but they give you a lot of torque, especially when you really need it. They are also truck-based so it's understandable that the ride will be stiffer. Although those two have a higher centre of gravity, I personally feel that they are more stable. especially during high speed.

This is just my personal view because I have a 6-year old 3.0 Fortuner that hasn't failed me yet. We have (with my family) practically toured the entire island of Luzon with it. From Aparri to Sagada to Baguio to Baler to Bicol, etc. The usual set up if we travel is something like this; 4 kids, 3 of them are 6-footer, 2 MTBs at the back and a Thule roof box that contains stuff around 100lbs. And did I say that I race that beast aggressively no matter what road condition? Flat roads or zigzags. It is also my daily drive around the city so you can just imagine the mileage.

This is how I abuse my Fortuner:


I just got a 5-seater Sorento and I'm impressed with its drivability. I also have the 1st gen Tucson, circa 2008. Those two I can compare BUT i don't think I can utilise my Sorento the way I did my Fortuner. It will be only for city drives and leisure long drives to the countryside. I may be wrong though...

Bro, I'll try to answer you query from my experience NOT from scientific/technical basis.

In general, CRDI engines are quieter and have less vibration. Idling noise is more noticeable than high speed noise once the turbo kicks in. They drive like cars with a little bit of noise and a bit less responsive. In a scale of 1-10 (noise and responsiveness), I would say that it's 8 to the 10 of cars (1.6 non-european sedans). You will hardly feel/notice the engine sound as you gather speed. NO VIBRATION. Swabe sila parehas. You'll surely enjoy your music

Comparing the idling sound of the Fortuner to that of the Sorento, the Fortuner has a deeper tone, a bit noisier than the Sorento, 9:10 I reckon. This is for a 6-year old Fortuner vs an almost BN Sorento. As a side note, I observed that when my 1st gen Tucson reached around 40K mileage, its idling and low speed noise, like the stop and go when you're in traffic, there was an irritating humming noise. Parang umuungol. Althought it disappears as it gathers speed, it's very irritating. I didn't observe this humming noise in the Fortuner even after >130K km mileage. I'm not sure if KIA CRDI have this noise as well kasi pareho sila ng Tucson ang tunog nung bago pa. It remains to be seen.

Noise Vibration & Harshness; i would also tend to agree Vibration is more felt when at IDLE state compared with gas cars... once moving its pretty quiet unless u'r really hammering the engine....

Seriously, I haven't used the Sorento yet for long drives with full load but I'm hoping that it will have a softer ride than the Fortuner. My Fortuner has after market suspension to suit my needs. So hindi rin siya ganun katagtag especially if filled to the brim. It's actually fun to drive.

Actually, as I mentioned previously, comparing the two is like comparing apples and oranges. Mag kaiba silang animal. I think the Sorento can be better compared with the Innova, CRV (gas), Captiva, X-trail (gas), Escape (gas) or with the other crossover vehicles, in terms of ride and value for money.

They're blocking their egr valves to: 1, lessen soot so that the dpf does not get blocked and less carbon deposits in the air intake manifold and lower carbon in the oil; 2, better combustion at low rpms (egr is fully open at idle and low rpm) so better fuel economy; and 3, better power due to better combustion at low revs.

i blocked the egr of my starex last week, and did the same for my sorento today. Lumakas nga ang hatak sa low revs, parang humahataw na ang vgt kahit below 1500 rpm pa lang. The engine seems more torquey also.

The EGR of my Fortuner was blanked for almost 3 years now. I have to agree that parang mas lumakas hatak niya.

Para sa emission ang EGR. Better daw for the environment. No issues when the EGR is blanked. Your warranty won't be voided kasi hindi daw naman magpapakita sa diagnostics yan. In fact, almost all the diesel Patrols running now are blanked already. I'm not just too sure if it has benefits in our Sorento at this time kasi hindi naman ito mausok. Once my unit emits black soot I won't hesitate to blank its EGR.

EGR valve recirculates exhaust gas from the exhaust manifold back to the intake manifold to reduce the oxygen percentage for combustion, normally during idle and low rpm operation. This serves to lower the combustion temperature inside the cylinder, resulting to lower levels of NOx in the exhaust (to meet lower NOx requirements, think euro 2/3/4/5 compliance). However the side effect is higher soot production (due to less O2 for complete combustion) and thus also a lower combustion efficiency at idle and low revs. That is why our euro4 compliant engines have a dpf in the exhaust. The egr valve is mostly closed at high engine rpm. So if the egr is blocked it will be the same as just having the egr closed at low rpm as it were closed at high rpm. Another side effect of the egr is lower efficiency by as much as 5% (according to one website i saw).

The benefits of egr blanking are as follows:
1. Lower soot production, less smoke so the dpf does not get clogged.
2. No exhaust being fed to the intake manifold so the manifold remains clean.
3. Complete combustion at lower revs leading to better fuel economy at low speeds. Higher efficiency also means more power available than before at low revs.
4. Cleaner oil.
