My dad currently has Dunlop Grandtrek AT2 285/60R18 installed on his '02 Trooper. We are planning to shift to Yokohama AVS S/T since he doesn't bring the Trooper offroad anyway.

why dont you try the BFG Macadam, they are street biased tires that has unique looking sidewall, saw some troopers here that uses this tire.

mdpo: My suggestion would be to stick with street tires nalang. I don't think you'll be doing some offroading with your 4x2 trooper right? I made the mistake of installing Grandtreks in our trooer na hindi man lang ino-offcroad because its only 4x2. Thats why on our next tire change, i'm switching to STs na. An AT can't compare to an ST in terms of riding comfort, handling, and smoothness.

yup, i guess i wont be going or be doing any offroad kaso di ba parang baduy.. coz porma ng car mo and yet you are using street tires?

Also how about durability? matibay ba ang street tires? alam mo naman dito sa metro dami potholes. How about grip? Ok ba ito? like lets say minsan dadaan ako sa mga buhangin? pero its occasional lang once a year or not pa nga.

pasyensya ka na dami ko tanong hehehe. thanks.

    Check out Dunlop Grandtrek AT2:
    255/70R16
    265/70R16
They've got good grip, handling, ride vs original Bstone tires.
Or dunlop grandtrek for street/AT: TG35 (used in Prado)
    265/70R16
Stock mags are 16x7 only, think max width on tire is 265.

IMO, as equally important as the proper choice of tires, is the selection of the wheels. The OEM wheels/tires (7JJx16, 245/70r16) are definitely puny, hence do not deserve a second look. If budget allows, it is definitely desirable to use low-profile tires, e.g., 285/60r18 with, say, 8JJx18 wheels; but if in a tight budget situation, a 2-stage approach, which maintains the 16-inch wheel diameter, may be utilized.

Here's what was done. The OEM wheel has an offset of 38 mm. You will note that in this case the wheels are stuck well inside the fender flares. The wheels will look a lot better if the offset is reduced to bring the wheels outward and fill the arches of the flares. If the wheels are moved at least an inch outward, then there is a much better filling-up of the arches. Quick measurement and a geometric analysis will show that an offset of between 10 mm. and 15 mm. works best. Due to tight budget, and availability at that time, the OEM wheels were replaced with 8JJx16 wheels having 5 mm offset. The OEM tires were simple reused, and when mounted, the wheels were moved outward by 45 mm. Now I have a much better-looking wheels, the sides of which are vertically flush with the flares at the rear, and protruding about 1/2 inch past the flares at the front. With this configuration, there is a perceived improvement in handling while doing tight turns, in view of the increase in track in both the front and rear wheels. Stability was improved.

Once budget eased-up, the OEM tires were replaced with on-road BF Goodrich Macadam T/A, size 275/70r16 uni-directional tires. The new tires are much better than the OEM tire in terms of grip during braking. It has a much comfortable ride, and road noise is much lower compared to the OEM ones. The Macadam is considered an on-road or highway tire (defined by BF Goodrich as 90% tarmac and 10% dirt-road), and therefore is only appropriate for use with the 4x2 Trooper.

    PROMDIBOY,

Got the 275/70r16 for 4,820. The next smaller size, 265/70r16, was tagged at 4,650. No observation yet on treadwear, considering just had the BFG Macadams last week only. But if biased claims are to be believed, expect lesser wear-rate when compared with the Trooper OEMs.

IMO, if the OEM tires are simply replaced with bigger ones, e.g., 265/70r16 or 275/70r16, while keeping the 7JJx16 alloy wheels, the improvement should be on better traction and enhanced grip during braking. There could be slight improvement in stability during tight cornering maneuvers. Also of these because there's more rubber on the road. The drawback is possible increased sway due to the center of gravity being raised by the amount equivalent to the increase of the diameter of the wheels/tires.

IMO, if the OEM wheels are replaced with say, 8JJx16 alloys with the offset decreased from 38 mm to anywhere between 10 mm and 15 mm, there should be a marked improvement in stability, even if the OEM tires are kept, in as much as the track or tread of the front and rear wheels will be increased by about 2 inches. If at the same time, the tires are also replaced as in the previous paragraph, then further improvement could happen. However, the downside of increased sway could still be there.

Guys, question lang if I would change into 20" mags instead of 18" which is per analysis of ondoy is the best for trooper. What will the disadvantage be? If ever 20" ang mags what size of tire is the best for the trooper.

I am weighing all factors like safety, handling, ride and porma.

    thanks!

Why don't you use Bridgestone Dueler AT 694? It is known in the US as Bridgestone Dueler AT Revo. This is the tire that I use on my Trooper. Mine, is 255/70R16. Great tire, it beats many street tires in handling and ride. It also emits less noise than most tires. It is actually in the league with Michelin CrossTerrain SUV. I am very satisfied with this tire, it grips the road like a gecko lizard and it is also cheaper than most tires in its class! That is why it is very popular in the US! Check this out: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....ler+A%2FT+Revo

By the way, the maximum tire size that you can use on your stock 16" wheels is 265/70R16. A 275/70R16 will fit but there is a slight danger of rubbing especially when turning at the max radius.

A 20" or 18" is the fad nowadays but the Trooper or any SUV for that matter does not look that good with this super size wheels. The largest wheel size and tire size that you can use while maintaining the stock ride quality, slightly improve road handling and improve the look of your Trooper at the same time is 17" with a tire size of 265/65R17. This tire size is well within the fender of your vehicle. Its center of gravity is the same as the stock (245/70R16) tire size.
