2006 Hyundai Starex GRX CDRI owner here. Van has 264,800 km on the odometer.

Have replaced the shifter lever and shifter bushings twice, the first time within the warranty period. Have also replaced front stabilizer links twice. Clutch has been replaced once. Radiator coolant reservoir replaced twice.

Timing belt replaced every 80,000 km. I still use the van to travel to QC from Pangasinan every other month, otherwise, it just runs around the province.

^how does it perform on an uphill, considering its an 8valves only diesel engine?

no offense, but many years ago, everyone had 8 valves. diesel and gas.
we had no hill problems, even then.

ability to work isn't based on number of valves exclusively.

I have no issue with its uphill. To me, it is near "at par" with our VGT Mitsu. Also, its powerband is almost uniformly distributed.

Uphill, it is no doubt, better,- compared to our Gasoline rides: a Toyota Wagon, Honda car and (as niky said earlier) our Nissan van.

^i know that old engines began with minimal valves until multi valves made it better

So 16 valves will perform better on an uphill climb fully loaded & an 8 valves van can tread an uphill alright with difficulty under a full load condition

Valves got nuthin' to do with it. Well, they have something to do with it... fewer valves means theoretically more restricted breathing... but that's not the be-all and end-all of the story.

    It's all about proper tuning.

Even modern one liter engines have better tuning and powerbands, thanks to EFI and electronic ignition timing, than carburetted 1.6 and 2.0 gasoline van engines.

Ramps that our 2.0 Vanette could barely tackle at full blast in first gear (slowing almost to a stop near the top) with no passengers, I can take at a slow crawl in most modern 1.5 liter MPVs.... with a full load.

On our steep test road out on Makiling, I have never had any issues with a modern car. Even an 800cc Alto or Eon, with a full load of FIVE passengers has no problems at all.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

    this being the reliability thread...
16 valves means twice as many potential problems as 8 valves.

If it's SOHC 8V versus SOHC 16V, very little difference. Just a slight increase in cost in terms of valve adjustment... maybe ten, twenty years down the road.

    i did say "potential".
    but you're right, of course.

That's more like a (recurring) maintenance item like the spark plugs. When the old spark plugs were replaced, so was the PCV.
