Hindi naman, bro.... Owner here of both Korean and Japanese vehicles (at the same time), now and in the past,- wala naman akong na-experience na ganyan....

Let's admit it, underchassis components are the weakest area of korean cars! I had a kia carens and suspension bushings wore out just after 20k kms.

my 01 starex travelled 3 times round trip to mindanao and back in 02-04 and i didnt change any of the front suspension parts until 06. this was the years that the roads where at its worst in Samar area.. mind you i wasnt taking it easy also.. from all the stories i heard when we bought our starex in december 02,, i thought our trip to mindanao would be the first and the last,, due to the roads in Samar.. and when my dad drove when i rested.. feeling nya Landcruiser 80 series ang drive nya.. honestly i never thought our starex would make it back to manila.

on those trips i have seen japanese cars break down on the side of the roads.. even jap SUVs.. up to the present i havent change the upper suspension bushings on my starex, the rear suspension is still orig.. except for the stab linkage and shocks..

but maybe the newer korean cars are not that strong anymore..

it could be the case sir.. that since hyundai was still trying to establish their brand name.. they made their parts stronger back then.. and now knowing they have moved up to their number 3 position.. maybe its all about looking good nalang. heheh.. this is just my opinion..

there could be other reasons of course.. my uncle way back in 99 bought a brandnew starex from a direct importer.. i dont remember the name of the importer.. but the guy told my uncle that some of the starex coming into the country,, where actually meant for the European market. my uncle said maybe nag pa pogi points lang yung seller.. but when we got our starex later on.. and drove it to mindanao and survive.. it made me think maybe just maybe there could be some truth to what the seller was saying.

what im thinking now is, is there a difference between the quality of the GS vans that either come from HARI and from grey market importers?.. what i know is that HARI brings their vans into the country as bare bones vans and just retro fit it here.. but that doesnt answer the under chassis problems.. unless HARI replaces them also with lower quality so that owners have to replace them at an extra cost. as its a wear and tear part.. hmmm..

    just to give an update,

i brought my GS to hyundai las pinas for 35k kms PMS (33k on the odometer) plus warranty claim.
it was test driven by their mechanic with me on the passenger seat. may problema nga daw sabi ng mekaniko.
they finished the 35k service first and told me that they will file the warranty claim. the service advisor told me to wait for a week or two for the processing. he sounded positive about an approval of the claim so i'm keeping my fingers crossed for now.

sabi nila i can drive it without worrying much as they will still hold. hmmm... sana nga but i'm going for the safe side - sa garahe muna si GS.

by the way, i canvassed the parts that need to be replaced. the prices are:

2 rack end bars - 1375/pc at hyundai; 490/pc at goodgear (orig din daw)
2 tie rod ends - 1103/pc at hyundai; 570/pc at goodgear (replacement)

i asked from other auto shops in sucat but the prices at goodgear were the lowest.
the overall expense is not really that big pero sayang pa rin kung ako magbabayad.
