For a few months now, my honda city (medyo old na din kse - 98 or 99 model) has been bothering me with its noisy engine. Price quotations vary from 5000 to a staggering 10000. Help naman po....don't know what to do and where to have it fixed (na sigurado and d naman msyado mahal)

Im sorry about that. I must admit i'm not really familiar with the posting rules. I dont really post much but im taking the chance anyway because of this nagging problem about the engine noise. I just need help. I hope you can help me.

you can try either forcedspeed or speedyfix. please do a search na lang sa google because i'm too lazy to post directions hehehe.

what is the exact sound? clatter? constant whine? is it really coming from inside the inside, as inside the rocker cover?

constant whine, like a "rrrrrrrrrrrrrr" sound, could just be a broken bearing in the alternator or idler pulley. maybe even a broken tensioner inside the timing belt area.

clattering, like "klak klak klak", is more serious. could be a broken fuel injector, broken valve stem, etc. a lot of shops could properly adjust valve clearances in a honda, but a lot of shops can't either. best to go to a specialist shop like the ones i mentioned. DONT go to freelancer mechanics sa tabi-tabi ng banawe... hindi toyota 3k or 4k yung engine mo.

honda engines are quite sturdy. di basta basta inooverhaul yan unles talagang inabuso. do have the throttle body cleaned, and then do another valve clearance adjust (dirty throttle bodies can also make a weird noise, dont know why. but jeff of forcedspeed cleaned the tb and adjusted something which made the engine quiet again).

The "clak clak clak" sound is more like it. In fact, i think it got even worse after several valve clearance adjustments that were alternately done by different mechanics in our area in Cavite. Sana nga po makuha sa proper adjustment ng valve clearance. Hanapin ko nlng ciguro si Jeff of forcedspeed agad bka makuha nya tamang adjustment and as you said, bka pwedeng linisin lang ung throttle or something. Im worried about the cost if indeed, damaged na nga piston ring and kailangan major repair. Sana wag naman. thanks for the input sir. Ill goggle for directions on how to find forcedspeed right away.

if the rings are loose you should be losing oil every time you run your car. and each time you start your car from cold, you should hear a distinct "klengkleng" immediately after the engine fires up.

warm it up a little and then open the oil cap. marami smoke (that is vaporised oil)? malakas ba talsik ng oil palabas ng fill hole? please do this very carefully. or get the gas station mechanic to do it for you na lang.

if the answer is yes to both questions, you may have excessive engine blow-by caused by worn piston rings. but this is very unlikely as i've seen my fair share of old hondas and i have yet to see blow by as bad as an old L300 diesel.

have you tried changing your engine oil? baka medyo manipis for your engine. I'd recommend 20w50 na lang. Another thing that you should look at is the timing, it could be a little bit advanced. First aid lang naman, basing upon my experience lang.

Re oil spill, i already had it fixed. Parang the mechanic changed the oil gasket ata. Still meron pa din ako nakikita konting spill sa ilalim after nakapark cya for sometime. Im not sure though if the quantity is significant. From the comments of mechanics ive asked, parang piston ring tlga majority sagot nila. Still, im hoping sana may magagawa pa sa forcedspeed like you said. Im not financially prepared kasi for an overhaul sa ngayon. Im planning to go forcedspeed in QC this weekend. Sana nga maayos nila ksi this problem has been really bugging me for months now.

Sir MazingerZ, i just had my oil changed at Caltex along Coastal ave last Sept kaya lang can't recall exactly what oil ung ginamit. What do you mean by timing? Is it the timing belt? My mileage is already at 122 plus and im still yet to have it replaced. Super mahal ksi ung mga natatanungan ko. Im planning to do it next as soon as maayos na ung engine problem ko.

By the way mga sirs, is there any way connected ung worn out timing belt sa ingay ng engine? Forgive the ignorance. Wala tlga ako alam sa sasakyan. I purchased this car out of impulse hoping im gonna learn to do minor trouble shooting through the years but obviously, d tlga kaya hehehe. Pakieducate na lang po and thanks for all the help

noisy engine - valve clearance or piston ring?
