I'm abusive with my cars and I think only larger displacement engines can take my abuse. My turbo DS had a 4G63-T engine and the original required an overhaul at 100k miles and finally died at 167k miles. In the meantime, the Lambda 3.3L V6 of my 2006 Hyundai Sonata V6 is still going strong and it's approaching 200k miles. Mostly still original.

I would consider a turbo if it's a Miata-sized car. For example, a turbo Civic or a Focus RS would be fine. Not much weight. For a people-mover like a CUV or sedan? Heck, no.

I'll go back to turbo coupes when all my kids move out and I have no need for a family vehicle. Heck, I might buy me something like this.

Not familiar with engine technicalities but is it really not adviseable to have a turbocharged engine for big people movers? The new CX-9 is using a 2.5L Turbo engine if im not mistaken... would you say that it would have a problem in the long run with it's built, weight and capacity?

A turbo-4 will be more than enough for the usual day-to-day needs of most people. The new crop of turbo-4 engines are as powerful as the older V6 NA engines but offers better fuel efficiency. Some CUVs and midsize sedans with turbo-4 engines are even quick enough (good for 0-100kmh sprints of 6-7 seconds).

If you want something quicker, I guess a turbo-6 or big V6 NA is something to consider for a big CUV or sedan.

I'm sure all those cars are quick and the turbos make them ideal for high-altitude driving (like where I am right now) and charging up a mountain. Turbos still have an appeal to me.

My problem with turbocharged cars is longevity. I usually keep cars for 10-15 years before buying a new one. Very few of the many turbo cars I saw back in the first half of the 90's survived to this day. Yet, I see numerous NA ones. Turbos are fun until it's time to service or replace them. Ka-ching! $$$$

Perhaps, turbo tech evolved enough so that they are much more durable now. But, we'll have to wait a number of years to find out. It might help too if I quit driving like a bat out of hell. You know, start driving like a grandpa. He He.

That's why I took the CX-9 out of my list. My leading candidates on the CUV side is the Honda Pilot, GMC Acadia, and Nissan Murano with the Honda as my favorite.

From my recent road trip, being able to quickly merge into (high-speed) traffic is a big thing (esp in California). So, the better acceleration of the Honda Pilot and GMC Acadia will count more. Plus, my vehicles are utilitarian. Kids will ride in it. They'll spill their food and drink, putting sticky gunk on the finishes and carpeting. Dents, scratches (both inside and outside the car). Paying more for a premium feel is a waste to me.

Of course, I'll baby the thing until my kid puts the first dent on it. Then, it becomes just another mule.

Coming from an old diesel Fieldmaster, I actually have to control my feet from overly stepping on the gas pedal for Fuel efficiency. So far i'm averaging 12.5Km/L on highway driving and 9.0Km/L when mixed with city driving/traffic. Actually not bad for a V6.
Wow 9km/l is defnitely good especially for a big v6 in a 2plus ton suv.
