Just an advice - When you take the time to help apprehend such criminals by testifying, make sure they are put away for good, if you know what I mean. Otherwise, there is a possibility they will get back at you or your family.

A few years back, an expat was robbed. Instead of letting the police officers deal with the criminal straight out, he decided to testify and have the criminal jailed. But after a few weeks, with the backing of a military officer, the guy was released. It turned out he was a repeat offender who has been in and out of jail regularly.

The first thing he did upon his release was to look for the expat and tried to kill him. Luckily for the expat, he survived the attack but had to be hospitalized because of his stab wounds. When the police officers handling the case suggested extra-judicial ways of handling the guy (as they did the first time around), the ex-pat this time told them to do what they have to do. They did. Case closed.
