What kind of scam is this?

Has this happened to anyone and if so what are the steps? Have just gotten back to the country with my family after being gone for over a decade so am in unfamiliar territory with some scams.

THis morning someone called the house and told the household help that the misus figured in a major vehicular accident. They even had our last name and duped the maid into giving my wife's name (well it is too late so I said next time to be extra careful and alert regarding this) by asking what they called her. They said she was in the emergency ward but in truth she was in a meeting since we have just spoken.

We have alerted the subdivision security and since they called again the maids informed them we have caller ID and have already reported them to the cops.

Obviously it was a scam to get money from the maids or goods they could pawn for money under the pretext of an emergency.

Questions:

1. How did they get the last name? Was it from the book? or is it possibly someone who knows us?

2. Would you have had them think they were going to meet up with the maid and tip of the cops to have them hauled in in a sting?

3. Is there reason to worry that they would come to the house and do more bad stuff?

fyi the supposed cel number they gave is 0916 266 8025 to which no one answers.

Salisi gang yan bro, lumang style na nila yan. Malamang they took the info from someone/someplace na kilala kayo. Medyo listo lang and brief the household help about this baka mabiktima kayo.

This scam is known as the Dugo-Dugo modus operandi. Chances are, somebody in your household is in cahoots with the perpetrators, so they gave your wife's name and residence no.

One of our neighbors almost fell victim to this ruse a few years back. Buti na lang smart yung maid, hindi kasi kaboses ng amo niya, kaya sinabihang wag ng tumawag ulit or else, tapos binagsakan ng phone.

'dugo dugo' gang yan.. usually nagbabahay bahay muna yang mga yan.. kunwari nag su survey.. tapos nakakakuha nang information.. like surnames, names, office address, etc.

Surnames, even full names and addresses, are easy to get. just look at the PLDT white pages

or people who work for u

or people who used to work for you, like security guards, drivers, househelp, yayas etc..

hassle to go as far as setting up a sting. will u press charges? Just let it pass. the bad guys will just go look for an easier target

Dugo dugo nga iyan. nabiktima kami niyan 2 years ago. Sa directory kinukuha yung name nung syndicate kasi sabi ng misis ko, mispronounced yung pagkakasabi sa family name namin, in the same way it was misspelled in the PLDT directory. After becoming poorer with quite a sum of money and jewelries, we learned our lesson, changed our number and had it delisted in the telephone directory.

It just irks me that some can get away with this. How can you apprehend these perps.

u cant catch them. well, if u really want to, u can set up a sting like u said

people will always come up with ways to separate us from our money.

There will always be people out there who are too lazy to make an honest living.

If you're bent on apprehending them, set up a bait.

I guess the reason they get away is because people do not want to bother with them and just threaten them back, so they just look for other people to victimize. Inform your entire household but do not trust them, you never know when they'll turn their back. When you go out of the house make sure you look out first and check kung may tao nagbabantay. Some of these can be daring and get into your house when you leave home in the morning off to work.

we've been victims of salisi 2 yrs ago, maid lang naiwan nung ginawa nila ung operation, they know all the names ng mga tao sa bahay, even ung mga relatives na bumibisita(this is the reason why pinapasok sya ng maid), then nagkunwaring nagugutom ung tao at since paniwalang paniwala na ung maid na kakilala nga kami, pinabili nya ng pagkain sa labas...yun na! after 15 mins bumalik ung maid, wala na ung tao, wala na din ung mga valuables sa bahay

matiyaga sila mag observe, pati mga oras ng pag alis at pagdating ng mga tao sa bahay inaalam nila.

last week meron pumunta sa bahay na lalaki. may sasakyan pa nga. i really dont know kung ano ang pakay pero sya yun driver nung delivery van nung nagdeliver ng sala set namin. Mukhang nasira yun plano nila since nung kumatok eh ako ang lumabas. akala siguro nasa office ako nun at si wifey lang at kasambahay ang tao. Bigla na lang nag-alibi na magtatanong kung saan nabibili yun jacobs na biscuits samantalang available naman sa lahat ng supermarket dito sa min yun. sabi nya wala daw dun samantalang kabibili ko lang nung umaga at madami pang stock. Ingat na din sa mga delivery boys, mukhang kasabwat ang mga to...

Prevention would be the best move. Be careful when taking in helpers specially from agencies. Require NBI or police clearance. Check with your village/barangay authorities, they may been blacklisted or with pending cases.Inform and warn them of these scams and what to do. Some subdivision security give free and regular seminars for domestic helpers.

In their desperate need, employers risk hiring helpers without background check.

Just an advice - When you take the time to help apprehend such criminals by testifying, make sure they are put away for good, if you know what I mean. Otherwise, there is a possibility they will get back at you or your family.

A few years back, an expat was robbed. Instead of letting the police officers deal with the criminal straight out, he decided to testify and have the criminal jailed. But after a few weeks, with the backing of a military officer, the guy was released. It turned out he was a repeat offender who has been in and out of jail regularly.

The first thing he did upon his release was to look for the expat and tried to kill him. Luckily for the expat, he survived the attack but had to be hospitalized because of his stab wounds. When the police officers handling the case suggested extra-judicial ways of handling the guy (as they did the first time around), the ex-pat this time told them to do what they have to do. They did. Case closed.
