(UPDATED 4:04) MANILA, Philippines — At least six people, including a priest, were killed in a head-on collision between a packed passenger bus and a utility vehicle along the North Luzon Expressway in Pampanga on Saturday.

Police said fifty-six others were injured, many of them in critical condition.

Sr. Supt. Fernando Villanueva, regional officer of the police Highway Patrol Group 3, said the incident involved a Fermina Express bus with body number 97824 and plate number NYN-688 and a Toyota Revo with plate number XHE-829.

"Umoovertake itong bus at kinuha ang linya ng Revo (The bus was overtaking another vehicle and went into the Revo's lane)," Villanueva said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Preliminary investigation showed the bus was heading north for Pangasinan while the Revo was heading south to Manila when they collided.

The incident occurred at about 1 p.m. at the portion of the NLEX near Sta. Ines village in Mabalacat town in Pampanga.

Senior Supt Pete Singian, Pampanga provincial director, said four of the fatalities were killed on the spot, including the Revo’s two riders and three of the bus passengers.

A fourth bus passenger died later in hospital of severe injuries, he said also over dzBB radio.

Police identified three of the fatalities as Fr. Domingo Moraleda of Claret School in Quezon City, Revo driver as Ruth Dianne Ferrer of Diliman, Quezon City; and Aurelia Montera of undertermined address.

Ferrer’s dead companion was described as a foreigner but the identity has yet to be established.

Superintentent Singian earlier told dzBB that bus driver Bernardo V. Santos, of Mangaldan, Pangasinan, was among those killed on the spot but other police officials assigned to investigate said the driver was still fighting for his life in hospital.

Singian said one of the passengers earlier reported to be a child turned out to be a “small woman."

“There was no child among the fatalities," he said.

Police said most of the passengers were on their way home or the All Saints and All Souls Day holidays. Province-bound buses from Manila were packed on Friday as people rushed to their rural homes to visit their loved ones in cemeteries.


Violent impact

Superintendent Villanueva said the impact of the collision was apparently so violent. "Grabe, naghiwalay ang katawan (It was gruesome. Some of the fatalities were dismembered)," he said.

Reporter Benjie Liwanag, who was reporting at the accident site, said the Revo was wrecked beyond recognition. “Warak ‘yung Revo, pati yung makina tumalsik (The Revo is a total wreck. Its engine was thrown into a distance)," he said.

He said the front portion of the bus was crumpled and anyone seating in the front seats could not have survived.

“Nagkalat ang mga bag, pagkain, sinelas, kuwarta at puro duguan ang mga upuan na nahiwalay sa bus (Bags, food, slippers and money are all around the wreck and blood-soaked seats have been separated from the vehicle)," he reported.

“Even the road shoulder has been destroyed," Liwanag said, explaining that the two vehicles were thrown off the road upon impact. - GMANews.TV

I think this would not be the last accident involving a bus....clearly it's due to driver's error that caused the incident...It all boils down to how the company hires their drivers and how the Lto issues licenses.

kaya ako, and friendly advice to all, stay away from buses, especially at night when they are all in teleport mode.. parang mga gustong kunin ang Ayala to Valenzuela ng 5mins..

wala namang mawawala sa ten kung pagbigyan naten silang mauna...
at least tayo and our cars are safe...

i suspect the vehicle that the bus tried to overtook didn't give way. So nagtagal sya sa opposite lane and di na nakabawi. Medyo delikado talaga dyan sa area na yan ng NLEX. Salubungan talaga ang sasakyan that's why in that portion of NLEX, speed limit is down to 80kph.

Accident magnet talaga yang mga Fermina and Santrans buses. Sarap pasabugin garahe ng mga yan para hindi na makapag biyahe mga buses nila.

I saw the picture of that accident sa Bulletin kahapon, grabe yung Revo, nawala yung drivers side, akala mo hinati lengthwise.

The Bus company was originally "Minas Bus lines" and was later named "Ferminas Express". This bus company was so notorious of having been involved in too many road accidents and had many times been suspended by LTFRB.

I still remember when one of their bus hits a school bus full of kids going to school at Regalado Ave. in Fairview, the school bus was overturned and you can see lots of blood and school bags thrown off the street.

Yup, from Red nag change color sila to Green. Back in early 2000, madalas ako sumakay dito. I remember one time muntik magpatayan yung driver ng Mina's at isa pang driver ng bus dahil lang sa pasahero.

kung ginagamit lang ng mga bus drivers yun pagka-risk taker nila sa mas productive na buhay, hindi na sila ma-stuck maging bus driver for life and become miserable and become insensitive in the roads

I just heard from news that a witness saw that the REVO was actually parked at the shoulder. The witness was behind the bus that hit the REVO. I guess there must be something wrong with the bus, not just the driver of the bus, for it to swerve all the way to the shoulder. Buses should be checked if they are still road worthy.

Iyang strech ng NLEX ay delikado kasi pag hindi mo alam, one lane each na pala, at galing ka sa 2 lane each. BUT, there is a solid line to indicate na bawal mag cross/overtake.

Last Sunday from SCtex, may car akong sinusundan, nag merge na ang SCTex to NLEX, biglang nag swerve ang car sa harapan ko sa harap ng another car, tapos saglit lang ay nag swerve to the opposite lane. Hindi nya alam na he is on the wrong lane, siguro akala nya he is going to the fast lane kahit na walang car sa harap nya. Tapos may kasalubong, siguro na realize nya na mali ang lane nya so bumalik siya. Ilan meters after, 2 lane road na.

Napa iling na lang ako.
