My uncle's Pontiac GTO was stolen in Boston but was recovered by the cops in less than two hours.

Reason for the quick recovery: the car is equipped with the OnStar tracking system which enabled the police to pinpoint the location of the vehicle.

Is there a possibility for local cars to be equipped with a similar system?

I think its effective to recover cars lost to carjackings and carnappings.

afaik some gen2.5 pajeros had the GPS tracking option as extra. i think some 2003 models. later on they used SMS tracking which was cheaper.

i believe mart has a SIM-based service. the vehicle will be equipped with some sort of unit (parang cellphone, i guess). then you can use the location function through text. primary difference is that it isn't GPS-based (ata), so kung malayo yung sasakyan sa smart cellsite, baka hindi ma-locate. binebenta ata nila dati sa mga companies na maraming delivery vehicles like UPS, FEDEX, etc. not sure if they still sell these though.

yung sa US, talagang security service yan, na tied in with the police system. parang yung mga home security systems.

ahhh, yung whois na service ng smart? triangulation pa rin naman siya so maghahanap pa rin ng matagal, hehehehee. and true, if walang cellsite near, di makikita yan at the moment of request and they won't keep attempting to track where it'll show up next unless you request at nataon a cellsite can find the number na.

That was before the US DoD removed Selective Availability ... intentional degredation in the accuracy of civilian GPS receivers. Typical accuracy today is 10 to 20 meters.

They had to do that, after the big scandal wherein an airliner was shot at (shot down?) in Chinese airspace, when its GPS receiver kept telling it that it was not even close...

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

Does GPS tracking really works in RP? If it does, how efficient naman ang authorities in responding? Siguro sa ibang bansa particularly sa US ay very convenient to for car owners. Pero sa atin siguro pag dating sa mga ganitong high tech gadgets, dapat mga pulis muna ang mag upgrade at mag-install ng mga ganitong systems. Plus of course, efficiency is a must.

May nagpresent sa amin ng GPS based tracking system the other day. It basically features a GPS/GPRS combo device which is basically a one way cellphone with GPS. Hanep sa accuracy as it uses GPS for location and not GSM triangulation techniques.

Their company is working on an NCR and Cebu City maps. Hanep yung demo, realtime yng pag track nung car nila along EDSA, para kang nanonood ng Tom Clancy film!

To monitor, all you need is an internet connection tapos may standalone app sila.

You can set up a geographical perimeter tapos pa umalis dun yung device (whether in a car or on a person), an alarm will be triggered. Ayus!

Is the standalone program executable in Macs? Does the device come with engine cutoff capabilities or alarm ang siya? San siya mag-rereport for the alarm, do you have to have mobile device with GPRS din?

Geofencing and other functions for GPS has this already. Talagang lahat ng GPS device meron nyan. Local GIS company that offers this are Webcast Tech Inc which has Find Me and ANTS which has Gotcha. Both of these are locally based and has a monthly subscription.

Actually, ung una nilang LBS (location based system) ay triangulation lang. Pero last year puro mga GPS rover na yung gamit nila. Medyo may kamahalan din ang device nla ranging from 20k pesos and up. Am not sure with the monthly subscription.
