May pinadaan akong PGH Heart Center ambulance the other day along EDSA. Ford E-150 based so medyo hirap sumingit kaya nag full stop na ako to let him pass.

That's why there are some situations wherein we prefer that the vehicle in front of the ambulance not completely stop, just slow down. Kapag maluwag luwag na saka lumipat sa shoulder and huminto.

Actually the rule of thumb is to pull over. Slow down, pull to the shoulder and come to a complete stop to give full way to the emergency vehicles.

Unfortunately local conditions are less than ideal. In most roads there are no shoulders to pull over to. This is especially true in the area I cover the most (Makati and other nearby cities). Sometimes, the transport officer (the driver) is caught off guard by motorists that suddenly slam on the brakes without checking if there is enough clearance to squeeze through. Although their attempts to pull over is appreciated, sometimes there is literally no room to pull over and we all just end up stuck togeter.

Last night, I was surprised to see an SUV tailing a fire truck even when the fire truck was blowing its horn, all light beacons blazing, and all cars pulling over to get out of the way. It was following it quick enough so I couldn't get his license plate. If I did I would have called the police to notify them...

    Not only in the Philippines...
