Because the owners of these transport companies are members of the LTFRB, in addition to how some politicians are also owners of transport companies. Hence, nothing will happen. It'll be like shooting themselves in the foot.

Well, he also shared with us another bus-related piece of information. According to Almendras, his wish is to replace existing buses on EDSA with double-decker ones.

"Double-decker buses carry twice the number of passengers while using the same amount of space," he said. "And it's only 60% more expensive than a single-deck bus."

Interesting. Instead of having to buy two brand-new single-deck buses, operators can just get one double-decker bus for an additional amount of just a little over half the price of one single-deck unit. And then they'll only have to employ drivers and conductors for a single series of shifts instead of two. More important, they can then practically cut their fleet in half, significantly lessening the number of buses traversing EDSA. A win-win situation, right? Surely, any bus operator would jump at the chance to acquire double-deckers, wouldn't they?

So why don't we have these double-capacity buses on EDSA now?

Almendras revealed that there's opposition inside the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board. When we asked him to elaborate, the government official politely refused to explain further.

Poking around, we were able to get the answer from another public official, who understandably requested anonymity. He said that "some people" have existing deals with the current bus suppliers, and shifting to double-decker buses would seriously jeopardize these deals.

Just wow. These individuals simply don't have the public interest in mind. We hope somebody in position grows balls big enough to bust these thugs.

nagpunta na sa LTFRB yung driver, confiscated pala ng MMDA yung lisensya. 30 day suspension yung driver sa kanyang operator, which most likely sisisantehin na daw ng operator. at most likely din daw tatanggalan na ng LTFRB ng lisensya.

nangangatwiran pa ang driver na huminto naman daw sya para ayusin yung barrier. Yung pala huminto sya sa malayo na nung i-radyo ng MMDA sa susunod na enforcer nila.

Driver of viral bus that hit plastic barriers on EDSA explains to LTFRB

The driver of the bus seen in a viral video sideswiping orange plastic barriers along EDSA on Wednesday showed up at the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board's office in Quezon City.

A post by radio dzBB's Allan Gatus shows Ruel Labin, driver of a Joanna Jesh Transport Corp. bus, explaining to LTFRB Board Member Ariel Inton.

Before Labin showed up at the LTFRB, he denied to GMA News that he recklessly hit the orange barriers along EDSA.

A video posted on Top Gear's Facebook account showed Labin's bus hitting orange plastic barriers after briefly moving out of the bus lane, which were installed supposedly to separate passengers buses from other vehicles to ease traffic on EDSA.

During an interview with GMA News, Labin explained that he was trying to avoid a speeding bus when he hit the plastic barriers.

He said that he parked the bus along EDSA and made sure that his passengers were not hurt before checking on the toppled plastic barriers.

Labin added that he and his conductor walked back and rearranged the plastic barriers one by one.

He also said that they were not speeding and the bus was running only at 40 to 45 kilometers per hour when the accident happened.

Labin said that they are prepared to pay for the damages on the plastic barriers and he also asked for forgiveness for the trouble the incident caused.

The Highway Patrol Group had said that they were assisting the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority in the investigation of the incident. —ALG, GMA News
