BOLINAO, Pangasinan - Ten Korean nationals died when their van rammed into the concrete wall of a warehouse along the national highway in Barangay Sampaloc here past noon yesterday, police said.
Senior Inspector Rizaldy Dalope, Bolinao police chief, told The STAR in a phone interview that only the driver was initially identified as Su K. Lee while the rest remained unidentified as their belongings were scattered in the scene of the accident.
A witness said the van was speeding amid the heavy downpour and was believed to have encountered mechanical trouble.
Four of the fatalities were females, one of them about six years old, while the rest were males aged 20 to 40.
The victims were rushed to the Sampaloc Community Hospital here but attending physicians declared six of them dead on arrival.
Rescuers tried to revive three others at the accident site but they eventually died, while another one died while being rushed to the Alaminos Doctors Hospital in Barangay Bolaney, Alaminos City.
Dalope said they have contacted the Korean Association in Baguio City to help police identify the fatalities, who reportedly came from the summer capital en route to Alaminos City where they were to be billeted at the Garden Paradise Resort. - Eva Visperas (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)
Sleeping while driving has been increasing as of late.
Might also be caused by poor tires not fit for the rainy days.

Didn't read anything about the driver sleeping or accident due to bad tires. Anyway, as far as i know, only F1 cars use RAIN TIRES (Threaded) for wet race course and SLEEKS ( no threads) for DRY Course.

The report said someone witnessed they were speeding amid a heavy downpour and was believed to have encountered a mechanical problem.

If this witness was correct, then we now have the root cause of the accident.

    1. They were speeding. Road may have been slippery. Low traction on tires.
    2. There was a heavy downpour. Visibility not good even with wiper speed at high.
    3. Vehicle was a Van. Difficult to control at high speeds on wet road.
    4. There were 10 people on board. A 6 y.o. girl and 9 adults. Stability at high speed is affected.
    5. Hand of God.

In summary, driver was over confident that he could handle a van loaded to max capacity at high speed on wet road in poor visibility. What he could not handle was the CONCRETE WALL.

baka dahil 165r14 lang gamit nila tire.

usually ganitong mga van is using a 165 to 195mm wide thread na tires diba?

    so kulang talaga ang traction.

Crap! Misleading thread title, doesn't do justice to the victims at all. Pag nabasa to ng mga relatives or friends ng mga biktima, lalong mainis. IMO, this thead should be deleted or the thread title changed.

Baka yung TS ang nakatulog while posting...

FYI ABS-CBN news reports claim that witnesses in the area concluded that apparently the victims were sleeping because there were no heard shouts just before the collision. This is also the theory of the local police when the report was aired in TV Patrol last week.

So there's no apparent crap in the thread title but a high probable cause. The only crap I can think of is your comment. Anyway another angle is the vehicle was too old and unmaintained as it didn't have a clear grip of the road.

But I must say, you must be a lousy driver to run off the opposite lane without realizing it. Only a sleepy fellow would have done that. And another thing he was speeding on a low visibility rainy condition. Now if that's not reckless to you I don't know what is.

Actually not only in IMBESTIGADOR but other news reports in different channels, initial interviews of the witnesses would corroborate on the premise that the driver was probably on the verge of sleeping. Here are the strong evidences.

    1. Driver was speeding under low visibility/slippery road situation. If the driver has the correct consciousness the % possibility of errors would not have been high.

    2. Driver swerved on the opposite lane slamming on the warehouse. Again could have been caused by the road conditions which was a result of miscalculation on the drivers part besides the fact that the car was poorly maintained.

    3. No screaming were heard just before the impact according to witnesses. If you are long driving and had no rest the previous day it will be best if you have at least 1 awake passenger to keep you awake. This is especially true in Night driving situations.

I will change the title to include allegedly until more evidences surface.
