ABS-CBN director killed in Makati bar shooting

A director for an ABS-CBN television program was killed before dawn Wednesday while five others were injured, including a police officer, when a still unidentified suspect opened fire at the victims in front of a posh Makati bar, DZMM reported.

The fatality was identified as Luigi Santiago, director of top-rater "Nginiiig," who was at the Venezia Bar at Glorietta II, Ayala Center, when the shooting took place.

Santiago was pronounced dead on arrival at the Makati Medical Center. The young director, according to Nginiiig executive producer Arthur Katipunan, was in a meeting Tuesday night with the show's assistant director, Cesar Arellano.

Katipunan said he was able to talk to Santiago over his cellphone Tuesday night.

Santiago studied filmmaking at New York University where he also majored in Philippine Studies and minored in Theology. He was not related to the filmmaking Santiago clan nor to the husband of Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago.

The injured were Senior Inspector Gertrudi Budaño, commander of a nearby police community precinct, Mary Ann Santano, Arnel Henteroni, Carlson Yu and Pia Albeso. Reports said they are all recuperating from gunshot wounds at the Makati Medical Center.

According to the report, the incident occurred at 4:20 a.m.

It was learned that an altercation ensued between the suspect and a group of men and women inside the bar prior to the shooting.

The person who opened fire at the victims reportedly fled aboard a Ford Explorer with plate number HTW 280.

Police are still verifying the ownership of the vehicle with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) as of posting time.
