I think they tried selling the Lada Niva here a few years ago.

Lada Niva is not bad at all. Very dependable, but it's a terrible gas-guzzler. Among other Lada cars, I only know the Samara (supposed to be based in the Fiat Ritmo floorpan) and the Laika (a copy of the Fiat 124). The Samara is worse than a current Chinese car, while the Laika is scheduled to be replaced by the Renault-based Granta. I would expect the Granta to be a reasonable vehicle, but not so cost-effective in the Philippines as the Chinese ones...

and let's not even talk about Russian cars. meron European carss nag flop dito. remember nagkaroon ng Peugot dito? Fiat? Alfa Romeo?

And those were the "nice" European cars.
The small operations that were importing them here couldn't compete on an even footing with Korean and Japanese-made rivals. Just imagine Russian cars hit with the ridiculous costs of importation... Chinese or mid-level Korean quality for Japanese price or higher... it'd bomb pretty quickly.
