Go for the V40!!!
(sorry biased ako). Based on my V40 here are the concerns I had with the vehicle :
Suspension - be sure the suspension is still ok. However, I think there's an affordable alternative if you don't want to purchase original Volvo parts (Cruven or Zee)
Headliner - since the headliner of the V40 is made from cloth, tendency of the material is to drop from the ceiling. You can have it fixed naman. Price ranges from P7,000.00 - home service or as low as P4,500.00. The latter is located at BF Homes.
So far, those are the major concerns I experienced with my V40. Other than the 2 I mentioned OK yung wagon!
Try to get a copy of Topgear Phils. June, 2006 edition. They have a review of the 98 Volvo V40.
Goodluck with your wagon hunting!!!

By the way, 850. I don't know if the problems are shared, but a boardmate from another board complained about the radiator design. The radiator isn't well protected by the bumper, and he bashed it in in a parking lot. Stupid move, but it's a design flaw, nonetheless.

The radiator is not that low on the 850. Maybe he really did something stupid. On most cars with higher radiators, the lowest thing he'd probably bash would be the oil pan.
Btw, may leak sa rack and pinion yung 850. Replacement rack is Php21k. Medyo mahal pala.

Hmmm... maybe it was a peculiarity of his car... and by his post, the object was pretty high. Most of us think it was a stupid thing to do, but he's had so many other problems with the 740, he'll take any excuse to vent.
Ouch... 21k? A replacement rack for a japanese midsizer is around 12k!

Replaced with the Pilot Sport 5 na ata, but the available sizes aren't yet as broad as the PS4.
