    Paris Goes After SUVs

    PARIS (Reuters) - Bulky four-by-fours could be banned from clogging up the chic streets of Paris after a top official in the capital's left-wing government described them as a polluting "caricature of a car" unsuited to city life.

    An anti-sports utility vehicle (SUV) resolution passed by the city council could lead to a ban on the popular vehicles in about 18 months if it is included in an overall project to improve traffic flow in the city, Deputy Mayor Denis Baupin said Wednesday.

    "You have to wonder why people want to drive around in SUVs," Baupin, a Greens party member, said on Europe 1 radio.

    "We have no interest in having SUVs in the city. They're dangerous to others and take up too much space."

    The city council voted Tuesday to urge Socialist Mayor Bertrand Delanoe to consider banning SUVs, which have become popular in recent years and now make up about five percent of the French car market -- just below the western Europe average.

    Baupin said Paris, which has been setting aside more lanes for buses and bicycles since a Socialist and Greens coalition took over City Hall in 2001, could not legally ban SUVs outright.

    "Our idea is to limit the circulation of the most polluting vehicles," he said. "That means SUVs and lots of other vehicles that don't meet European pollution standards."

    Baupin, who often cycles around Paris to promote more environmentally friendly transport, called SUVs a caricature of a car and said they were not adapted for use in a city.

    "It's made for a family on vacation ... and usually they only have one person in them," he said.

    "Let's be logical and only allow into the city cars that are adapted to it."

    actually i've just been to paris... traffic is bad there. They also have the MBenz A-Class and Smart cars as options. The Smart car is cute and sporty at the same time. It also occupies half the space of a normal COMPACT sedan.

    mind their own business guys; dito satin pollution of all kinds abounds; polluted mga utak, ilog, hangin, economy, governance, etc.;

    we could do the same in metromanila with dilapidated cars & PUJs; pero maraming magugutom na pamilya ng mga jeepney drivers..

    its not a stupid idea if you have really bad traffic and small roads... sa spain nga mas habulin ang mga compact cars talaga dahil ang liliit ng kalsada dun eh...

    i think its just being practical...

    dapat yata mag color coding na lang sila paris.. parang unfair kung i-ban ka sa city just because na meron kang SUV..

    teka.. ano ba ang SUV sa paris? baka naman mga large SUVs yan tulad ng expedition..

    maganda naman ang train network sa paris at ang daming rail line, so pwede ka mamili kung sa kalye or underground ka mag travel..

    dapat siguro ang i-ban lang kung 1 or 2 persons lang ang sakay ng SUV. what if a family of more than 5 ang pupunta ng city, e di 2 cars pa ang dala nila, mas nakaka cause ito ng traffic and pollution.

    france is far more organized and advanced in so many ways kaya nga developed country 'yan;

    we cannot compare our own chaotic, corrupt-ridden traffic management with them; the last they will do is make life lousy not only for their citizens but to hundreds of thousands of tourists going in & out of their country on a daily basis;

    lately, one news made headlines when a section of their less than a year modern intl airport extension collapsed resulting in a number of fatalities: it appears their government decided to just scrap and totally demolish the remaining of the new extension and rebuild a new one!!

    that's how the french government is serious and they dont care if it cost money - it may never spend one single franc for it -

    yari ang main contractor jan..

    ban SUVs? kinda pathetic IMHO. they are barking up the wrong tree.

    most of the SUVs out there is only longer than your average car by less than a meter.

    eh kahit naman puro maliliit ang kotse eh kung sandamukal pa rin ang nag dradrav edi la pa rin effect.

    they should follow the singapore or hk model if they really are serious.

    Exactly my point, besides what about Jimny's theyre SUVs right? What about S Klasses? Heck, theyre as long as my Pajero and they dont get banned? From a traffic-reduction point of view, let me just reiterate.... PLAIN STUPID hehehe

    Napaka narrow minded talaga ng pranses!

    Pero from a PARKING point of view, i could somewhat understand. You guys should see how they get out of parallel parking in Paris!!! Hehehe. Literal, banggaan ng bumper.

    Unfortunately

    i say, let the people decide. if the buying public decides that it isn't nearly as inconvenienced by parking hassles, fuel costs, and manuevaribility-in-narrow-roads issues as the government says it is, then so be it!

    if there are compelling reasons to give up SUVs (such as rising fuel costs, for example), the public will willingly give them up. But such draconian regulation doesn't seem at all the right way for me, in this case at least.

    hboy, hindi ba ang purpose talaga ng bumper is to absorb the impact of low speed accidents? and not really as a parking assistant?

    baka naman kasi bobo lang magpark ang mga taga european cities... hehehe...

    kaya yata hindi sila mahilig sa parking sensors sa europe...

    ang sensor nila eh pag gumalaw na yung sasakyan sa harap or likod hehe..

    dito sa atin pag ginawa mo yun eh pwede kang mapatay hehe..

    hanggang ngayon naliligaw pa din ako sa tsikot..ngayon ko lang nakita ang thread na to..

    May point din naman ang City council..ang problem hindi pa finished ang law na ipapasa nila. Masyado talagang strict ang Euro Standards..marunong lang talaga silang sumunod unlike dito satin. Siguro ang mga tatanggalin lang nila eh ung mga hindi papasa sa standards nila.

    IMHO, paris is right and look where they are now. we are so critical and look what we are left with. from vancouver to stockholm and the rest of europe, you have dedicated bike lanes and even bike traffic lights. we should all learn from them. look at manila and we cant even see a solution to our situation
