With permission from the other thread's (overrated cars) starter, I would like to kick off our discussion on the topic of the Philippines most underrated vehicles.

For me Nissan Sentras have been given a bad reputation as to the availability of parts, maintenance issues, etc. Pero it has been one of the more reliable cars for me. Our family has a Nissan Sentra SGX circa 88 which is still in good running condition. And my younger sister has a Nissan Sentra LEC PS which is still very reliable till now. Both of this cars have a value so low kulang na lang hingin ng buyer.

Also, suzuki vehicles (medyo biased ako . . hehehe). They tend to malign suzuki samurais which for me is a very reliable offroad vehicle, although its on the bumpy side. And my vitara which they say is an underpowered, malakas sa gas (which I believe is not true, I get a mileage of 14-16 kms/liter daily - 85 kms a day), and truck like in demeanor. Mababa rin ang mga resale value ng mga suzuki.

    Okay, lets get the ball rolling . . . . .

agree with the zuks being underrated... but as for spare parts availability, there are only very few shops that carry parts for zuks... ang alam ko lang is links ( tama ba spelling?) in banawe.

as for gas consumption ng vitara, pag city driving at matic medyo malakas talga, 5-6 lang nakukuha ko.

In terms of resale value, Mazda and Ford are underrated.

    Sentra, specifically the B14.

I spent more maintaining my 5th Gen Accord (I've had it for only 2 years) than the whole 10 years I had my Sentra.

I agree, Nissan Sentras are given a bum rap just because of their initial models.

I actually owned one a was able to compare it versus a Lancer, Corolla and a Civic. Of all 4 cars, the Sentra gave the least number of headaches. Ang tibay talaga.

how about mazda familias? like sentras they also suffer from the spare parts and maintenance stigma, but really, parts are not that hard to come by, if you just know where to look. And performance-wise, i'd say it's a:2thumbsup:

    The Kia Pregio.

Okay, fit and finish was definitely not in the league of the Japanese, but in terms of the mechanicals, it never ever let us down (save for the finicky A/C). This was back in a time when the Koreans were not known for bullet-proof reliability.

The only time the engine on our automatic Pregio complained was when it did an extended climb up Marcos Highway while fully loaded. A 5-minute cool-down rest later, it was back in action.

Hyundai and Kia's present success owes a lot to this van, in my opinion.

    Ssangyong Rodius. :evillaugh

I think practically all Suzuki vehicles before 2006 were underrated. Aside from my infatuation with the Vitara, fascinated din ako sa Super Carry microvan. Lightweight, sturdy as hell, fuel-efficient, and cute too. The interior looks fairly spacious and cozy at the same time. Tapos samahan mo pa ng 4X4 capability -- ayos!

Sayang talaga yung Toyota Echo, it was released before its time. I still go gaga every time I see one on the street every now and then.

OT: I dunno but the familias have a tendency to drink gas like beer. My cousin owns one and even if he takes good care of it, it still consumes a lot.

+1 on the Kia Pride. A lot of people have called it disposable junk... but the condition of many Prides on the road today owes more to the fact that people who could afford a Pride brand new weren't the kind who were apt to maintain them well... a well-maintained Pride is a dependable service vehicle, and when something breaks, replacements are beyond cheap... they're unbelievably cheap.

The Series II Sentra was a great car. The Series III Sentra FE was, too. I was very sad to see ours go. It was very robust and very simple, and given a good spritz of carb cleaner every oil change, it was economical, too. It was also great fun to drive. I would have liked to keep it forever if I could have.

The Mazda Familia, unfortunately, is really a gas-guzzler. Very sweet-handling car, as sporty as the Civic of its day, but unfairly un-noticed by most of the buying public. Too bad we never got full support from Mazda in those days... with a simple ECU upgrade, the Familia would've been a bit peppier and a lot more economical... and more competitive with the Corolla crowd of its day.

    -----

I was going to say Lynx, obviously... but dear lord... it's so damn slow as stock... nakakainip... 220 km/h nga lang, di niya kaya... hanggang 207 lang kung walang mods...

I talked to one guy who said: "Eh, mukhang pang-Ford Laser (1980's hatch) yung pang-ilalim, eh... mukhang masirain!"... Yeah, that's how I was able to cart over 100 kilos of water in the trunk after a typhoon, wrecking two of my mags on the potholes in the highway without busting a single bushing... :hysterical:

It does have its problems, but so what? This car is F.U.N.
