+1 on everyone's posts
The cargo "security"/"privacy" problem can be taken care of by purchasing a tonneau cover. The latest CR-V (well technically, it's a wagon) has one that doubles as a two-level load floor.
The tonneau cover is usually an option for shorter hatchbacks though---the outgoing Jazz has obvious mounting points and rails for a retractable unit.
As for the stench of smelly items "invading" the passenger area, well, this used to happen in sedans with split-folding rear seats too. You can use charcoal or commercially available odor-reducers to reduce the impact somewhat.
Many compact cars when turned into wagons (e.g. Chevy Optra, the old Subaru Imprezas) still retain the same rear overhang length, so parking ease usually isn't compromised.

advantages:
more cargo space and utility
generally cheaper to insure
sleeper factor (unless it's WR Mica Blue )
can't really think of any disadvantages...

plus yung motel on wheels wag lang masyadong umuga at baka lapitan ng guwardiya at kahit may menyek tint ay makikita kayo sa loob pagtinutukan ng flashlight
