8.5 km/l? Depends on the amount of traffic. Sounds about right. Consider that you have a powerful engine there... not just a 1.5 or 1.6 liter engine, and the Focus is a heavy car (it's about as heavy as an older Accord or Corona). It should improve by 1 km/l or more after 5000 kms. Follow oil changes religiously, keep your tire pressures high (don't go below 30 psi), and make "birit" from time to time. This is important in "seasoning" your engine. We've seen a difference of 5-10 hp on the dyno for Focus/Mazda3 engines that are properly broken in versus engines that are "babied" all the time.

You'll note... quite a lot of people are quoting OVER 10 km/l on the highway. But if you're looking for 10 km/l in traffic, you're looking in the wrong place. Only small subcompacts (Picanto, Jazz, etcetera) get over 10 km/l in city driving. Even Civics and Corollas can get as low as 7-9 km/l in the city.

    Thanks a lot!

Give it time man. It will improve.

Hi, I got the same car, 3k+ on the odo. Average 6-7 km/l rush hour driving. Takaw. Same consumption daw as turbocharged Subaru forester!

Actually, a turbocharged Forester can get less.

Read above... people have extremely different fuel economy figures. Just because your economy matches another guy's economy (with a bigger engine) doesn't mean yours is worse... but then, if you drive the Forester yourself on the same route you might be right...
