Interesting point. IMHO i cant quite see donut shops seen as a lifestyle as a coffee shop could. You never saw the cast of friends hang out at a donut shop? so it may be quite a stretch creating the "donut culture" unless the american cop look comes into vogue (but then again it would only be a fad).

This could be why KK tries to push their coffee with donuts as well since they realize it will be not easy to pull off. Yet, will it be seen as an alternative "coffee" joint? when there are so many already?

The places to be seen thing is something we get from imagery introduced by external and internal influences. KK annual planner anyone?

jollibee maybe a hamburger chain pero palagay ko mas sikat sya sa palabok, chicken joy and lahat ng food na pang-Pinoy na nasa menu nila. dapat kasi i-measure sa number of burgers sold na lang eh. andaya ng jollibee
hindi ba they are under "fastfood chain" not "hamburger chain"

wala na ngang hamburger ang mcdo eh... try nyo umorder ng burger mcdo, waiting pa minsan

    2 jollibees : 1 mcdo

jollibee is becoming asia's biggest food chain, bought chowking greenwich, red ribbon, chinese fastfoods at china, etc... tony tan caktiong is running for billionaire na... sobrang lakas na nila... sana nga matalo na nila mcdo worldwide...

That is a strategy. However, IMO, it is hard to push donuts with coffee as their driver. The latter is not their competency. Partnership with Figaro? hehehe....

In my limited travels in the US, I have been to a few Starbucks coffee shops. However, have not (unfortunately) chanced upon a KK outlet. Have encountered the KK goodies, already in a box, in the checkout counters of Target, though.....

FYI "old blue" the technical term for "fastfood" or "hamburger joints" or "chicken places" is QSR (Quick Service Restaurant). so "van wilder" has hit nail on the head...there is no such thing as a hamburger joint per se. it was just a way to descibe it.

mcdo is always known as a hamburger chain around the world. people troop in to buy burgers and mostly burgers. here in the Phils, most of the ABC crowd go to Mcdo for burgers. same as Wendy's.

yes the burger mcdo eh hindi mabili, ampakla naman talaga ng lasa nun parang hindi american. masarap talaga ang cheeseburger or double cheeseburger nila.

in fact, if i'm going to rank 'em. baka talo pa ng tropical hut hamburgers yan jollibee sa sarap eh hehehe. rancho ranchero with egg, yumm!!!

jollibee pamatid gutom. iisa lang masarap sa kaniya burger, burger steak hahaha

malabo yan even in war-torn bosnia or africa, mayruon mcdo eh hehehe

if he is running Peso billionaire, the mcdo franchise is trillions $$$$ na (if there is such a term) hehehe. kung i-count natin lahat ng real-estate value nila in every saturated corners/intersections of all countries they're in, wala talaga laban si jollibee.

noon nag-coast to coast ako last '95 from NY to Cali sa greyhound, napurga ako ng tatlo araw sa mcdo. 12 years after, i'm sure they have grown exponentially. la pa nga internet noon eh hehehe

One for the premium segment and with aggressive expansion plans. Even the ad space they bought with billboards and streamers are more than what gonuts did initially. is this money well spent or wasted? remember si Gonuts had the strength of word of mouth...

is max's in over their head? or are they sitting on a goldmine.

after the holidays and observation we can now make assessments.

if KK is not going to succeed how long will you give it?
Their expansion is a requirement of their franchise contract with Krispy Kreme. Per KK website regarding franchising.

INTERESTED IN A KRISPY KREME FRANCHISE? HERE ARE THE CRITERIA FOR ALL CANDIDATES

Applicants must have current ownership and operating experience or previous ownership and operating experience of multi-unit food service operations in the market that you desire to develop.

Our franchisees must possess the capital sufficient to fund the development of the market. We currently grant franchises on an area development basis. Specifically, our area developers are required to build multiple stores (10 or more) in a market. The minimum net worth requirement is $30 million or $1,000,000 per store to be developed, whichever is greater. For instance, a 15-store market requires a minimum net worth of $30,000,000.

Area developers must have substantial familiarity with the market proposed for development and be willing to develop multiple units over a period of time. In addition, they must be willing to diligently exert full-time best efforts in performing their obligations under the area development agreement.

okay now we are about to hit june 2007. when did KK start? also how many locations do they have now? the billboard on EDSA says Fort and Megamall. Are there any more? Last I recall kasi they were supposed to open one every two months. Have they stayed true to this?

also i went to the one sa fort a couple of weekends back. early evening and it was empty. in fact they were giving away donuts.

any field reports or speculation on this?

specially with mister donut having a 9 peso (is this right) billboard on EDSA right after KK.
