What the First Gentleman did for Love
PROFESSING his love for his wife, First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo said this was the reason why he volunteered to leave the country and bear the pain of separation.
"I love my wife very much. ... Being away from my wife and my family is a very painful decision," said the First Gentleman in a statement on Wednesday, the same day President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo announced to business leaders that her husband had decided to go abroad.
The First Gentleman said it was difficult for him to see the President take the brunt of criticisms for the negative press he received through the years.
"If there were anything I can do, any sacrifice I can make, to give her peace of mind, I would never hesitate to do it. That is why I have offered to leave," the First Gentleman said.
Media reports have alleged that the First Gentleman has influenced several government transactions and appointments.
He has also been accused of stashing away campaign contributions to his wife. A witness in the ongoing Senate hearing has accused the First Gentleman of allegedly receiving "jueteng" payoffs.
In Malacaņang, Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said he received initial information that the First Gentleman might leave the country on July 5.
He said he had no information where the First Gentleman would be going, although sources said he might go to Hong Kong or the United States, where his brother owns an apartment.
Asked how long the First Gentleman would be gone, Bunye said, "The President has said that the First Gentleman's decision was a sacrifice for her, for their children, and other members of the family. It's everybody's sacrifice. We cannot say it's a sacrifice if he would be gone only for a short period of time so we can assume a much longer
period."
Bunye said he did not know what would happen to the Office of the First Gentleman when he leaves.
In a phone interview, the First Gentleman's lawyer Jesus Santos said his client's decision was the best way he could help his wife hurdle the present political crisis.
"He is saddened by his decision, but he is doing this for the country," lawyer Jesus Santos told INQ7.net.
He also said there was no legal impediment for the First Gentleman to leave.
