you may find this a stupid query but will really appreciate your technical input.
will the car brake system engage even if the car's running downhill with engine off?
    thanks!

it will work but not to it's full extent since your brakes are power assisted. since the engine is off, you will be relying on sub 100% brakes. you'll notice this when you pump the brake pedal while the engine is off, it because very hard and spongy.

Assuming that the brakes are power-assisted, no. Or at the very least, it will be very difficult to operate them. The engine has to be running in order to supply the electricity necessary to operate them.

brakes are vacuum assisted. if the engine is not running, there will be no vacuum supply, hence, very very hard to engage the brakes.

The system has enough vacuum for about one or two more uses even when the engine is off. After that, the brakes are still there but without assist so you have to exert all the pressure.

The parking brakes are cable operated and work the same whether the engine is running or not.

Yes, for a while... In my observation, the more you use the brakes with the engine off, the harder the brake pedal gets. It'll work, yes, but you'll need legs of steel.

Is this for a fuel economy thing? Forget it... leave the engine on... too dangerous.

Yun nga... brakes will work, but after the first two or three presses, they'll get very hard. (From experience, "driving" a towed vehicle.)

And if you're thinking of driving downhill with the engine off, don't do it. Too dangerous.

I think it will still work but not as precise as the engine running.

while the engine is off, the vacuum supply for your hydrovac is stopped and eventually you will have a difficult time stepping on the brake.

yes, it will engage. You have enough vacuum stored for 1 or 2 brakings, after that, you'll have to exert a lot more pedal force.

Will the brakes function with engine off?
