Hi guys, I just want to ask what is your break-in routine for a new vehicle? A friend of mine always make sure that he goes somewhere far to have access to an express way to be able to run the engine to higher RPMs and be able to constantly change RPMs without interruption due to tight traffic.

I've done only one somewhat successful break-in and that was when we bought a vehicle somewhere from the province and drove back home. The next vehicle we have was never really "broken-in" properly yet as we never had the time to go somewhere far and it is hard to push RPMs high enough based on the vehicle manual along EDSA.

This is just about right. just vary your speed and never exceed 120 kph or gun the engine past 60% of the red line (more or less 2700~3000 rpm for a diesel and 4000 rpm for a gasoline engine). so long drive, laro ka lang between 80 kph and 120 kph. do not idle for long periods.

Pa-bless mo sa manaoag tapos diretso akyat ng baguio or swimming sa hundred islands, break-in na yan pag uwi mo sa bahay.

Thanks for the reply. However, the question now is what if you weren't able to properly break-in the engine during the break-in period? Can you still get the full fuel economy potential of the engine if you break-in late even if vehicle mileage is already at 3,500 km. but still no proper break-in procedure done, worst, vehicle has been used in some heavy traffic conditions.

Plus, wag lalagpas ng 100 kph or 3,000 rpm sa first 100o kms.

Para sa akin old practice na yan. Wala na yan sa karamihan ng owner's manual ngayon

As long as you don't push your car to tachometer redline, you'll be fine. I bet you have not pushed the car past 4000 rpm.

Personally, for new cars I drive slow with light load... (RPM is never over 3K). After the 1K check, I'm confident to load the car, but still driving carefully until 5K

I drive the usual way after...

Wala naman mawawala, some will have their own way of breaking in a new car/rebuilt engine...

Way back mid-80's... We drove carefully with minimal load without A/C!

    *light/minimal load - max 3 passengers*

There are two schools of thought when it comes to breaking in a new car. On one camp there's the drive-it-like-you-stole-it crowd, which favors savoring every ounce of performance that the car has to offer.

Car manuals these days usually have a section on how to handle the vehicle for the first thousand kilometers or so. Just follow the instructions and you should be fine.
