The best thing for you to do is show your mechanic your owner's manual the OEM valve clearance range. By experience kasi, medyo too proud mga backyard mechanics na akala
mo alam lahat ng specs (though hindi nman lahat). If your mechanic does not like to see your manual, go look for a better and more experienced one. With old school diesel, if you err with the valve clearance, it is better to have a slightly loose than a tight valve clearance. Check also your manual if it requires the engine to reach operating temp before adjusting the valve clearance, if so and your mechanic adjusted it while the engine was cold, then definitely it will be tight when the engine reaches operating temp. One more thing is, it might be that your mechanic's feeler gauge is out of specs or baka nman alam nya yung valve clearance specs in inches but his feeler gauge is in mm and hindi nya alam i-convert. I have seen many backyard mechanics with this situation...
