May 23rd, 2009 02:35 PM #1Ano po pwede replacement na makina sa CA20 (Nissan Maxima). Dadalhin ko kasi sa mekaniko this week, and kapag sinabi na overhaul, baka magpalit na lang ako makina.
Ano compatible replacement pwede?

I would think the GA16DE and GA16DNE is too small but I checked the specs and it's a close match to the CA20's output (HP and torque). Downside, the complex EFI wiring. Upside, complete running engines are cheap and plentiful.
Alternative might be the GA16S or GA16DS (carb versions). Not as powerful (only 94 to 95 HP) but since it's carb, less complex to install. Downside, it's still a carb engine and if there is a problem with the carb itself, it might be expensive to fix.
If you plan to keep the Maxima, I would suggest the SR20DE swap as well. Just have it planned out correctly and patiently. It will be a bit pricey (as Niky mentioned) but the end result would be a more powerful car (from the original 105hp to 140hp) with a more modern EFI system and hopefully better fuel economy.Last edited by ghosthunter; May 23rd, 2009 at 05:02 PM.

GA16DE
GA16DNE
GA16S
GA16DS
SR20DE
sr18
How much ang running price for the above-mentioned engines...
And how much do you think an overhaul usually costs?
Is it still worth it to have the engine overhauled?

kung may andats ka.. SR20VE or VET hehehe...
SR16VE N1 ok din..
as for the engines mentioned above-- prepare a maximum of 100T for a complete swap.
ang prob sa CA20s ng maxima natin ay ung availability ng parts, maoverhaul mo man yan, pero it depends na din sa gagawa.

SR20DE would be around P50K to P60K for the complete swap.
SR18DE should be around a little less that amount. Downside, locally it's not as common as the SR20.
The GA16 series engines would be significantly less. Purchase price would be 10k to maybe 20K for a complete engine (depending on the type of GA16 engine). Add labor of around 10k to 15k. If you are getting the EFI version, make sure you get the complete "set" which includes the ECU and uncut wiring harness. The carb version of the GA16 engines were used in the locally sold Nissan AD Resort. You should also prepare a budget of around P10k for other stuff that might or might not need to be replaced or done, like moving engine mounts, replacing certain electronic stuff like sensors which might have been damaged, replacement gauges if the stock gauges (mainly the tach) aren't compatible, etc.
A full overhaul can cost around P30K to P80K for labor and parts. Some parts can be repaired or refinished but others would need replacement. For the CA20, getting those parts might be a little difficult.Last edited by ghosthunter; May 24th, 2009 at 06:28 PM.

I hate the AD Resort version of the engine... because I have one. The GA13s in the Sentra FE have a better carburetor and rev more freely.
If you're upgrading to a GA16... might as well get the fuel injected one. Be aware that the Exalta series (around 99-01) GA16s have VTC, also... which could be good or bad, depending on whether you want a little more power or a little less complication.
The SR20DE is the absolute best bang for buck swap. Even better, the Altima SR20DE will have drive-axles that are the proper length. Sentra driveaxles on the GA16 might be a tad short for the Maxima's width.
Only thing extra over the GA16 swap you'd likely need is a better fuel pump.
Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

True but the thread-starter is comparing prices/costs of either doing an engine swap or overhauling the existing engine. So performance is not the priority but cost in the short and long run.
Which you think is the better GA16 version for this? .... the GA16DE or the GA16DNE? I would be leaning towards the DNE because of less problems like the idle problem associated with the GA16DE in the B13s.
Kicks has better acceleration and mileage due to the bigger battery. Everything else goes to the...
