magkaibang process ang porting and polishing

porting= enlargement and reshaping of the ports themselves
polishing= smoothing out and polishing of the intake and exhaust ports so that gases would flow through quicker

these two process are done to increase the engine performance and power output.

both will accomplish faster/better air velocity and air dynamics inside the engine.

for additional info sir, google is your companion...

    For what car?

Porting and polishing will require nothing more than a new headgasket. They can help unlock the potential of the engine, but should not be undertaken lightly.

    Answer these questions:

    1. Have you changed your air-filter?
    2. Have you had a properly designed, long-tube air intake installed?
    3. Have you installed the best possible intake manifold for your engine? (if Honda B-series... there are several intake manifolds that will fit)
    4. Have you had a full exhaust installed?
    5. Is it a professional job? Are your headers the best you can buy?
    6. Have you changed your cams? Cam gears?
    7. Have you installed an aftermarket tuning solution? Standalone EMS? Piggyback?
    8. Has your engine been blueprinted and rebuilt?

If you've answered yes to all of the above... then go ahead and PnP.

    -

There are some engines with very woeful head designs that can benefit from PnP right off the bat, but it's a process that requires opening up a perfectly useable engine for what is basically a top-overhaul (so add about 6-8k in labor on top of the labor for the PnP) and a process that cannot be undone.

For modern DOHC or SOHC Japanese engines, which already have decent headflow stock, any of the above modifications listed will be better bang-for-the-buck than PnP.

Interesting thread, cause I haven't heard of anyone doing engine PnP & blueprinting nowadays. These used to be so popular during the days of illegal drag races when single or double side draft Solex & Weber carbs were in vogue. Engines were simpler then. My friends just used to use a rotary brass bristle brush & a flex shaft connected to a hand drill. Blue printing then then was just changing to race camshafts, a PnP & Solex or Weber double side draft. Along with a change of suspension, your good to go. Nowadays, di na pwede into, but it was fun then.

Wait, isn't blueprinting and PnP the same? Some shops in the UK and states, refer PnP as Blueprinting..

To be honest, I don't know why they call it blue printing. It has to be more complex than just a PnP.

A port and polish is basically that, the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder head are enlarged and smoothened, and the air passageways are straightened and evened out. This minimizes turbulence in the air going in and out of the combustion chamber. The "polish" basically smooths the finish to eliminate turbulence caused by the rough surface finish of those ports... although a good PnP will leave a bit of roughness near the intake valves, as some turbulence near this area helps "swirl" the air-fuel mixture, allowing it to "mix" better for a more even burn.

PnP is an art and a science. Do it wrong and the cylinder head is ruined. Do it right and you can unlock a whole lot of potential.

Blueprinting can be done alongside PnP, but it's completely different. In blueprinting, the engine is balanced and rebuilt to a very exacting specification... valve clearances fixed. All piston and rod weights made identical (or close as possible), the crankshaft balanced properly, the piston-cylinder wall clearances and piston-ring gaps fine-tuned, etcetera... all of this allows the engine to rev higher and with less stress, and to either make more power or last longer... or both.

Now... blueprinting IS an overhaul. But like PnP, it's not really needed for a street engine... depending on how old the engine is or what its condition is.

Both popular in the old days. Nowadays, engines are better built, and any gains from doing this are more marginal. Hell... some engines, you have to shed blood, sweat and tears to see even the tiniest gains from stuff like intakes and exhausts, where in the old days, even the cruddiest exhaust work would gain you a whole lot of horsepower.

Nowadays, electronic engine tuning, either via a standalone ECU or a piggyback controller, is the big ticket item. And unlike a PnP or blueprint, you can uninstall a piggyback when you're sick of it.

I recall my friends having their flywheels balanced, putting a close ratio gearbox among other things.I just miss the sound of the old school cars growling with their race cams. Personally, I'd do it to a project car like a Lancer box type or a celica but not to modern cars. Too sensitive.
