If I have to make an educated guess, the mechanic most likely messed up. The valve clearances were probably set too tight that the valves were no longer properly seated on the valve seats and hence, not sealing it. This will allow gasoline to either go back out the intake manifold or out the exhaust port during the compression stroke. That might account why the engine developed loose compression.
