March 7th, 2004 12:52 AM #1Guys.......
Next weekend, my LC80 (1HD-T, 4.2L, I-6 engine) with 79k at the clock, will undergo its regular ritual of engine oil change. I would like to get your suggestions, most especially from those owning this ride, as to which brand/API grade/viscosity is most suited for this engine.
TIA......

March 7th, 2004 05:25 AM #2ondoy,
I use Mobil Delvac 1 5w40, API CH4 on my 1HD-T and change after a year or 6k km. Used Delvac MX 15w40 before but changed every 6 mons or 3k km.
Think the Delvac 1 is much better in terms of performance and protection.

I believe you're in the right track. IMO the best available full synth around is Delvac 1; the only drawback is its cost.
Since cost is very much an issue, what I have in mind is to create a concoction of Delvac 1 and another dino oil, preferably JASO DH-1 rated and a 15W-40 multigrade. I am looking at a ratio of 4.3 liters Delvac 1 plus 5 liters dino oil. This should produce a semi-synth that I plan to use only for 5K km or 6 months, whichever, comes earlier. Delvac MX dino oil is a candidate early on, but was dropped on account that it is not JASO DH-1 rated.
Assuming you're with me on this plan, which is the best dino oil currently in the market that should fit the purpose? Your insights on this would be much appreciated.
TIA......

I too used Mobil Delvac1 in my HDJ-80 in the USA, but have recently switched to Amsoil there (also a synthetic oil).
For regular oil, what Toyota has on their dealerships is a good worry-free bet. I haven't done much research yet on what's really available here in Pinas, but I found that the cheapest Shell diesel-engine oil is only rated for CC --the bare minimum stuff.

Ondoy,
AFAIK it is not advisable to mix oils of different types and makes as this would degrade it's properties not a cummulative type. Oils are specifically blended to meet their desired requirements. Mixing a syntheric with another mineral oil disrupts this perfect balance which leads the the negative side of the scale. Just choose a good, cheap synthetic oil in the market. As this I would recommend either the Petron Rev-X All Terrain or the Caltex Delo Sports or the Top 1 Synthetic diesel oils which are a cheaper alternative then your chosen Delvac 1. Goodluck.

March 9th, 2004 01:59 AM #6Guys,
Thanks for your suggestions. Finally decided to use Delo Sports synthetic blend, 15W-40, API CH-4, JASO DH-1 ratings. The LC80 should be happy with this engine oil.
On one hand, I still think that mixing Delvac 1 with a conventional oil is a logical idea, what with this statement, in reference to the technical specifications of Delvac 1: "It is also fully compatible with conventional oils." What matters most, I think, is the choice of the conventional oil that should not enhance additive clash with those in Delvac 1. For the moment, I will put this idea at the back burner, for further evaluation.

Jeepcruizerph, the 1HD-FT engine needs about 9.1L, if I remember correctly.

That's a first, mixing synth and mineral, but not sure it will work as intended. The synth side may be too little to make a difference. Think the "synth blends" are basically mineral base oils with synth additives so i'd prefer just a plain mineral oil changed often if a full synth is not an option.
roydok,
The Top1 synth is really a blend- says so on the can's fine print. Kinda misleading but the price gives it away.
