If the diagnosis say's you needed it, then youll need to take apart. If in doubt, then dont.
You dont have any other choice if experiencing these.
If it needs cleaning it'll be because one of the "jets" (orofices which control the amount of fuel added) has become obstructed. -low power runs unevenly at certain throttle openings, white blistery deposits on spark plugs. Or there may be blockage in some other passage.
Or the float may be leaking, needle and seat damaged (overfilling with fuel, black smoke, runs roughly).
Or use a Gumout Carburator Cleaner. Easy to use just follow the can direction.
Oh!!!! one more thing your car need a tune up and check tire for proper air. All those can contribute a gas guzzler.

erryl,
mikuni carbuertors if not tampered with and not damaged from mishandling should be okay. they just need periodic cleaning both the external exposed linkages and vents and also the main and the auxulliary venturii using the pressurized lacquer thinner in a can or carburetor cleaner. low gas mileage could also be caused by improper tire pressures, wrong type of tires, dragging brakes, dragging driveline, clogged air filter, too thick of motor oil used, bad ignition, excessive dead weight in the car as in "emergency tools and supplies", overcooled engine or jack rabbit driving habits.

Hmmm! You have done most of the possible cause. Have you been check the pressure regulator lately? Pressure regulator is inserted in the fuel line just before the carburator.
Although I believe those are the most common problem but, Catalytic converters are possible too. Most people never think to replace them. If the engine cant breath it wont run well. Try bypassing the cat, drive up-hill if it works properly you just found the cause..replace it.
