Honestly, you have to decide your goal muna:

    1) Overhauling really rely on the parts that you bought and the mechanic doing the job. Either way malaki rin ang risk mo.

    2) Engine transplant with the same model would be your simplest option but would still carry the same risk as option 1...kasi hindi mo rin naman alam ang "health status" ng replacement engine.

If you can have a trust worthy mechanic na magaling, I'd suggest you go for option 1. One other advantage is you keep everything stock and if done right, it would be just like brandnew. Cost of 1 or 2 would really just be almost the same, mas matagal lang gawin ang number 1.

If you can't find a good mechanic to do it, why not enrol a saturday class sa meralco foundation and learn being the car mechanic, you can even use your engine as your project material so you can overhaul it for "free" and spend only on the parts....plus you learn a lot about your car pa.

last opinion ko, forget about the upgrade that would cost you an arm and leg....lalo na kung hindi mo naman planong maging or maghobby ng karerista....besides hindi tatagal ang sasakyan the way you want it kung ikakarera mo.

If you want a race car...build or buy one made for that purpose...

If you want a daily driver ride...you got one na, just fix it well...

If you want both functions...sell your ride and buy a ready made sports car.

BTW, from an experience of a friend who had to do an engine overhaul, he was more than happy with the overhaul!

However, he also found out that there were other problems with his car (cracked transmission housing) so medyo napadagdag gastos siya....

What happened to your engine?

kung mapagkatiwalaan mo ang mechanic at kung magaling talaga ito, go for an overhaul.

Blow-by, busted engine. your symptoms seems may problem ang pistons mo...but normally a compression test of the pistons would give you a better opinion kung busted na nga.

Hindi lahat ng basa ang spark plug means that it is busted. A wrong timing, busted spark plugs, problematic high tension wire as well as problematic ingnition coil would also produce that same symptoms.

If your mechanic did the assessment without any quantifiable test, maybe a 2nd opinion from a different mechanic is in order.

if valve lang ang possible problem mo sa compression, that would just be a top overhaul and that would be just around 4-7K all in.

I'd vote for an overhaul...provided your mechanic is good.
