Sir, In addition to this thread what/how would you recommend a best float level for a carburetor for economy use.,and also could this answer my problem regarding high gas consumption, the burn on my spark-plugs is black and the four contact threads inside the distributor cap are almost consumed by the wheel or what ever it was called,.
    Just a thought...

    Dear johncarlo:

Its very unlikely that you have leaking shaft seals, the best sign of this is NOT 2nd gear jerking but poor idling.

To test, squirt some engine oil near where the shaft enters the throttle body, if the idle improves or the oil gets sucked in, then you have a leak.

    Dear ELSINORE:

float levels are not adjusted to suite a tune - they are FIXED.

AISAN carbs have a long float chamber on one side of the carb body.

When you remove the carb cover (along with the float assembly) you will see the float chamber.

It has a step on one end. The float level is correctly adjusted if:

    1) the level of remaining gasoline in the chamber is exactly that of the step
    2) the float hangs straight down (and the needle valve is shut) when you hold the carb cover vertically with the needle valve assembly uppermost
    3) the needle valve doesn't jamb or fall out when you hold the carb cover vertically and let the float pivot to the maximum opening.

only attempt this if you have a lot of experience in tuning - you also have to have a sensitive ear.

Black spark plug tips are an indication of a rich mixture - you're wasting fuel.

Regarding the distributor - is your problem that the contacts in the distributor cap were burned or that the cap was installed incorrectly leading to damage?

    Regards,

    Dusky Lim

had a 5k carb installed in my 2e big body corolla recently when my original carb failed (twice na na-repair kit, then nalulunod na madalas before replacement of the carb)... medyo hard starting during cold mornings, though haven't had that problem recently with all the hot weather we're experiencing... noticed though my fc went up... from 10 kpl to 7-8kpl... anything else i can look at? or is carb the problem? my mechanic said that a lot of other corollas use the 5k carb on the 2e engine... any input would be appreciated...

    Dear dod:

The 5k carb is ok but not great. If you can find a 3k carb you will find it is easier to tune and MORE STABLE and ECONOMICAL in operation.

That's because it was made when Toyota's engine's were simpler, while the newer 4k and 5k carbs have so much extra stuff added for anti-pollution that they don't perform as well.

If you can swap or exchange it for a 3k carb - so much the better.

Now kung nalulunod dati yung makina mo - malinaw na HINDI na-adjust ng tama yung FLOAT LEVEL - which means whoever did it got it wrong - naka dalawa pa siyang repair kit!

Haay buhay..... Napaka basic yung Float adjustment.

You cannot tune the carb correctly without setting this right.

You might want to find another guy to work on your carb.

    Best Regards,

    Dear dannybe:

I'm sorry but AFAIK there are little or no spare parts for Solex carbs, that's one of the reasons I recommend using Webers - you can still order parts for them.

Regarding Webers, FCC that is, Filipinas Chemical Corp (aka - the Funny Candy Co) used to carry all the parts.

As to Solex side drafts, try an online search for parts, and good luck. IIRC TRD (Toyota Racing development carried their parts).

BTW how were these carbs stored? Did you DRAIN the GAS from them before keeping them?

That's VERY IMPORTANT, if you did NOT do this, it's quite likely that the gas has evaporated and left a hard white crust that will block all the critical passages and DESTROY your carbs.

Open up the top and take a look at the float chamber - it its a mess in there - the carbs are pretty much gone - sorry.

    hi dusky,
thanks for your comments, i might have to use the 5k for now as i have to save for another carb... btw, would you know how much a 3k carb would cost? whether surplus or brand new... i noticed though my 5k carb is much simpler than the 2e carb, some components were not connected to the 5k carb, the actuator is actually not used anymore...
