a low-charged battery hastens battery sulfation

    What is Battery Sulfation?

    loss of cranking power.
    longer charging times.
excessive heat build-up leading to "boil out"
    shorter running times between charges.
    dramatically shorter battery life.

the battery plates break down faster (sulfation), if kept for longer times in under-charged condition.
these plates break down more slowly, if they are kept in fully-charged condition.

No need to remove the car terminals from the battery while charging?

Ideally, yes. Some automatic chargers might not stop charging when the parasitic load is interfering with its measurements. But for practical reasons, no need if you're just topping it off.

I don't trust this charger enough to leave it on indefinitely. I got into this with my eyes wide open.... I know it's not a CTEK, so I won't expect it to behave as such.

i don't, when charging using my dumb, basic charger.
    just don't crank the engine.

While parked waiting at Meralco compound i decided to check the charging voltage of my gs. 14.1V lang with engine on idle. Mababa di ba? Dapat at least 14.5V? napa-order tuloy ako ng smart battery charger sa lazada, yung Foxsur na100 amp model. Di ko nakita agad yung 150 amp e yun sana pero for shipping na kasi nung makita ko. Anyway good naman na for 3sm yung 100 amp. Di pa dumadating. Sana oem.

    13.8V is the float-charge for 12V system

    4.2V for 3.6V system

    42V for 36V

    55.2V for 48V...

If your vehicle uses an efficient alternator, on startup, initially the voltage will be high ... as soon as the battery is nearing full level, it will gradually taper off the voltage and increase as necessary depending on load ...

A 12V FLA battery needs a minimum voltage of 12.9V to start charging (albeit, slowly).

I had the opportunity to observe more how CTEK works. Once the battery is fully charged, it will stay at a minimum voltage of 12.63 V for a few days.

After a few days, and I don't know how many days, CTEK will "play" charging the battery between 12.63 to 13.18 V. I forgot to measure the time interval.

Once I left the car for about two months and when I started it, it was the first time for me to hear it cranking forever. It was when I didn't use CTEK. It must be noted that I am using a "cheat version" of battery. This is an ordinary battery by Motolite, given free by my friend. I never experienced this with the stock battery, not until it died.

Right after turning on CTEK, voltage will climb slowly, for about a minute, up to 14.05 V.

This is a little lower than the charge coming from the alternator at 14.46 V.

I do not know what is my stock battery, if it's an EFB or AGM. All I know is the brand, Yuasa. It is unfortunate that I wasn't able to observe CTEK on my stock battery, the way I was able to observe it now.

Regular car chargers, including smart chargers, usually have minimum 5 amperes of current. The higher the current, the faster the charging. While, battery maintainers have only 1 ampere, more or less, of current since it is only aimed for maintaining the "charge" at full.
